José Luis Arrieta (Ag2R Prévoyance) rode smartly to take the win after spending the day in an eight-man break. The 35-year-old Spanish cyclist had the biggest victory of his career. The peloton, some eleven minutes behind, battled winds, but stayed together. The GC remained the same, with Alexander Vinokourov (Astaná) leading.

Stage 19 from Jaén - Ciudad Real, not expected to impact the general classification, contained three small climbs. Over the 205.3k stage, the riders crossed the Alto del Parque Natural de Andujar (Cat. 2 at 75k), Alto de Sierra Madrona (Cat. 3 at 102.6k) and Alto del Tamaral (Cat. 3 at 117k).

The relative ease of the stage suited an escape. Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole) tried to get ahead for the first sprint of the day, but that didn't last. Eventually eight riders managed to stay away. The group, who would eventually finish the stage eleven minutes ahead of the peloton, consisted of Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel), José Luis Arrieta (Ag2R Prévoyance), Aketza Pena (Euskaltel-Euskadi), José Vicente Garcia Acosta (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears), Lars Bak (Team CSC), Dmitriy Fofonov (Crédit Agricole), David Loosli (Lampre-Fondital), and Pieter Mertens (Davitamon-Lotto).

Bak took the first sprint, followed by Garcia Acosta and Arrieta. The eight would ride well together, working their way up to a nine minute advantage at the half-way point in the stage. At the second climb (in order: Martens, Pena, Loosli and Arrieta), the group was 9'38" ahead. Egoi Martínez (Discovery Channel), back in the peloton, faced no competition for his King of the Mountains jersey. He, along with the rest of the riders, raced along at about 36km/h.

The escape continued with no real threat from the peloton and on the descent of the final climb, the gap increased to around eleven minutes. The peloton would never catch the escape. The front of the peloton was mostly controlled by the Astaná riders. Each taking their turn to guide the peloton and protect their leader -- and the Vuelta leader -- Alexander Vinokourov (Astaná).

The break rode at a steady pace around 44km/h, worked well together for most of the stage. The peloton ran into crosswinds and CSC drove up the pacing, hoping to put some time between Andrey Kashechkin (Astaná) and their own Carlos Sastre (Team CSC). Nothing came of the effort and Kashechkin looked strong.

With 11k to go, the attacks in the escape began. It was Garcia Acosta who attacked first, with Mertens close behind. Fofonov and Loosli took off next, but the four didn't last and eventually all eight riders were back together. Arrieta attacked next, with Gusev on his wheel. Bak took off after them and eventually it's eight riders again.

The attacks alternated, but no one really looked strong enough to take off. At 8k to go, Gusev, Arrieta and Pena looked a bit spent and had to chase to regain the group. Bak attacked again, but to no avail. Not one to give up, Bak shot off the front again. With 7k to go, Bak had a small gap and was chased by Garcia Acosta and Gusev. Close behind them are Fofonov, Loosli and Arrieta.

It looked, with 6k to go, that Bak might have caught the rest of the group out. His gap was increasing and the riders behind him were chasing, but not working together. The Danish rider looked strong and with 3.5k to go, Gusev attacked with the rest of the break chasing him. But, as luck would have it, with 2.5k to go, Bak's gap began to vanish. They caught him, sending him to the back of the group with 2k left.

With less than 1k left in the stage, the group of eight riders charged together toward the line. Bak attacked briefly, but was caught by Loosli, Arrieta and Fofonov. The four rode toward the line, but it was Arrieta who launched himself for the sprint and won the stage. Fofonov came in second, followed by Loosli and Bak.

A good ride and a great win for the Spanish rider on a French team. The peloton dragged itself to the line 11'16" behind the stage winner. Vinokourov stays in gold for another day. Hushovd kept his points jersey and Martínez sealed up his KOM jersey. Tomorrow's 27.5k time trial in Rivas Vaciamadrid could determine the winner of this year's Vuelta. Be on the lookout for a good ride by David Millar, who already has one time trial win this tour. See you tomorrow at BiciRace.com.
