Astaná 1-2: Kash Tops Vino Domination

The Sierra de la Pandera exploded the Vuelta a España; from the base of the 8.3K climb, Andrey Kashechkin (Astaná) launched an attack that immediately put Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears) into difficulty and set up the move for maillot oro Alexander Vinokourov. Vino stomped towards the abandoned military base, later to be rejoined by Kash. The Kazakh road champion took the stage while compatriot Vino added 32" over his key rival. Vino may not have won the Vuelta but Valverde looks to have lost it.

Today's 18th stage was the last summit finish of this 2006 Vuelta. The first 130 kilometers of this race were basically flat, with only the category 3 Alto de Las Encebras, with it's summit 45K into the race. But then the doozy came: 20K of climbing at the tail-end of the day's stage; first with the category 2 Alto de los Villares, leading to the hors catégorie Sierra de la Pandera.

The first to attack was Olivier Kaisen (Davitamon) after 4 km. He was joined by Nicki Sørensen (Team CSC), Benoît Poilvet (Crédit Agricole), Raul García de Mateo (Relax-GAM), Markel Irizar (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Pedro Horrillo (Rabobank) and Pierre Drancourt (Bouygues Telecom). By the 26K marker they had managed to gain 1'40" over the Astaná-led peloton.

The seven man move slugged away all day; never really a threat to the overall lead of Vino but they were going to have to pay the price. Behind a GC battle was going to be waged and surely spell the end of the escape.

With 27K remaining in the stage, leading to the base of the Villares, the boys had 1'44" over the peloton. After being away for around 110K the escape was falling apart. Sørensen, Garcìa de Mateo and Kaisen split off the front of the escape, making it to the climb first, a grueling cat. 2 affair that only gave a small respite before the HC Pandera kicked.

Behind, the favorites and contenders for GC were amassing at the front of the peloton for the impending warfare. The experienced riders knew they had to be at the front over the top of the Villares if they were going to be in the ideal position for the start of the Pandera.

The Sierra de la Pandera is an 8.3K climb. It immediately starts with a nasty 14%, "flattens" to around 8 and 9% but at 5.5K it kicks again to 15%. Towards the top there is actually a sharp downhill that feeds to the final 500m, which is around 8%. The Vuelta has used this climb on two other occasions, the last being in 2003, when Valverde (then with Kelme) used the downhill run to charge up on Roberto Heras and take the stage.

From the gruppo, Iban Mayo (Euskaltel-Euskadi) launched and picked off the leading trio, being joined from behind by mountain leader Egoi Martínez (Discovery Channel). The Spanish duo topped the Villares with 42" on a thinning chase.

Immediately on the Pandera Luis Pérez (Cofidis) fired. Caisse d'Epargne had Vladimir Karpets and Joaquím Rodríguez working to hold the race together for Valverde but there was not much they could do once the riders were on 14% gradients.

At -6K the riders left were: Vino, Kash, Karpets, Valverde, Pérez, Iñigo Cuesta, Carlos Sastre (Team CSC), Manuel Beltrán, Stijn Devolder (Discovery Channel), José Angel Gomez Marchante, Leonardo Piepoli (Saunier Duval-Prodir), Samuel Sánchez, Igor Antón (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Sylvester Szmyd (Lampre-Fondital).

Kash shot this group all to hell. The Kazakh, like yesterday, fired off the front, setting up for another Astaná blitz. Vino followed Kash's missile with a launch of his own. Vino's burst put him up with his mate while Valverde was put immediately on the ropes. Struggling, there was not much Valverde's team could do for him; Rodríguez tried pulling his captain back in the race but Valverde's legs would not allow the Spaniard to follow.

Vino left his compatriot and raided the slopes of Pandera for time. Gomez Marchante and Sastre joined Kash, while further back it was Antón, Devolder, Piepoli, Rodríguez and a suffering Valverde (already 37" back from Vino).

Pandera's slopes started to take the bite out of Vino's move. Kash, sensing his group was catching Vino, leaped out, and quickly joined with his team captain. Kash shepherded his mate up the final portion of the climb in what was a masterpiece of Astaná teamwork. (team directors take note of Astaná's tactics.)

The Kazakh duo hit the slight downhill run, and in the final 500 meters of uphill to the line it was all Astaná. 26 year-old took his first grand tour victory while Vino gained time. Valverde came home 32" later looking tattered.

Kash propelled himself into third overall, 45" over Sastre, while Vino sits in first with 53" over Valverde. It will take a combination of events in Saturday's time trial to enable Spain's favorite rider to move back into the gold, and possibly win the Vuelta, events that are not likely to happen. Vino looks on his way to Vuelta glory; there is just a matter of that 27.5K run on Saturday. Stay tuned.
