Tom Danielson (Discovery Channel) scored his first ProTour victory while the Vuelta GC was turned upside down. Durango Danielson, 28 years old, attacked from an escape group to go free on the Alto de Monachil, but behind a storm was brewing... Before making it to the stage 17 finish in Granada, il Americano was joined by an on fire Alexander Vinokourov. Vino, with the aid of Astaná mate Kashechkin, turned the screws on an isolated Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears), gaining enough time by the finish to take the maillot oro.
The 17th stage of the 61st Vuelta took the peloton from Adra to Granada, for a total of 166.7K. There were two category 1 climbs and a category 3 sandwiched in between. L'Alto de Albondon (1300m) at 36K from the start, the l'Alto de Lanjaron and the final ascent, the Alto de Monachil (1510m) at 139.4K or 20K to go to Granada.
Daniele Nardello (T-Mobile) put in one of the first attacks of the day; a solo move that made us BiciRace.com writers say, "Hey look, Nardello is in Spain!" Unfortunately for il Italiano, the move was short lived and only made way for a bigger escape. In the move were Pietro Caucchioli (Crédit Agricole) and Egoi Martínez (Discovery Channel); both of the men were fighting for mountain points. The Spaniard took maximum points over the Albondon, enough to put both of the men at 117 apiece and Martínez in orange.
On the descent, before the slight cat. 3 climb of Lanjaron, there was a reshuffling of escapes, resulting in six men off the front. By -102 the boys had 3'00" over the Caisse d'Epargne chase. The six: Danielson, Sergio Paulinho (Astaná), Lars Bak (Team CSC), Stéphane Goubert (Ag2R Prévoyance), Dmitriy Fofonov (Crédit Agricole) and Eric Leblacher (Française des Jeux).
30K later the gap had established right under four minutes (-71K with 3'47"). The six were working well together; only Dane Bak and Kazakh Fofonov were not really pulling their weight. However, the lack of full cooperation did not deter the escape from staying clear to the base of the day's final climb, where they had 2'30" in hand over the chase. Behind, the chase was mostly controlled by Valverde's Spanish squadra, but CSC started to aid in the pace-making for Carlos Sastre before the day's final climb.
Tifosi reading the parcours might not have thought that there was going to be a GC shake-up, but they were in for a surprise. The Alto de Monachil touched gradients of 12% and 13% before reaching the summit, leaving the riders with a downhill run of 20K to the Vuelta's historical town of Granada.
Bam! As soon as Durango Danielson hit the slopes of Monachil it was evident that his legs were that much smoother than his companions. The Colorado man was free on his own after a short stint with Paulinho. Behind it was Paulinho's teammate, Kash, who lashed out. The Kazakh, losing time the day before, put in a bid for stage glory, or so many thought.
Kash splintered the maillot oro gruppo. José Angel Gomez Marchante (Saunier Duval-Prodir) darted out from behind to hook up with the Astaná rider and the two made tempo, but behind the bomb was about to blow. In what must have been premeditated, the crazy-mad Vino exploded from the thinning group of favorites at -24K (around 3K to the summit), distanced Valverde and bridged the gap to his teammate. Ladies and Gentlemen, you were watching 100% pure Vino!
Kash latched on when Vino passed and the Kazakh duo went to work; trading pulls, along with Gomez Marchante, toward the summit of Monachil. Valverde was in a world of hurt without his normally rock-solid Caisse d'Epargne armada. The gold wearing Spaniard was left to chase on his own, looking over at his companion, Sastre every so often for the hope of help. By the summit Valverde was 42" behind Danielson, now descending, and only 10" behind the Kazakh duo.
The descent of Monachil was mostly a straight affair, leading into Granada, where the final 3K was downhill. The roads did Valverde no favors; although the Spaniard was touching 72Kph he was not making any ground on Vino. The Kazakh was going full throttle, leaving his mate and Gomez Marchante at -9K (while 45" on Valverde) to bridge to Danielson. It worked. Four kilometers later Danielson was swept by the Vino storm.
Danielson caught his breath while Vino continued to mastermind the stage. Danielson, hoping for new found friendship, started taking pulls with two kilometers remaining, which helped Vino gain more ground on the fading Valverde. Vino led the duo into Granada, where there was no answer to Danielson's surge in the final meters. Il Americano got the 20" bonus and Vino came away with a 12" bonus while behind the clock was still running for Valverde.
Morale in the gutter, Valverde was unable to salvage his lead. The Spaniard rolled in with a group of eight, containing Sastre and Kash, 1'39" back; the Vuelta lead was now Vino's.
Tomorrow will not ease up for Valverde, now 9" behind Vino. Stage 18 will head for the summit finish to Sierra de la Pandera. It is the last major moutain stage, and will leave only Saturday's Madrid time trail for any serious GC changes. Valverde will want to recuperate tomorrow, maybe just trying to stay with Vino, and then hope to swipe back the time in Saturday's crono. If Valverde comes out of the crono with the gold jersey, it will be anybody's guess what Vino will pull on the final stage in Madrid... Stay tuned.
