Igor Antón (Euskaltel-Euskadi) surfed the GC wave to top Vuelta a España stage 16. While the favorites were launching hostilities the 23 year-old Basque rode clear to top the Observatorio Astronómico de Calar Alto solo. Behind, Alexander Vinokourov, Carlos Sastre and Alejandro Valverde battled for the classification, with Sastre looking the weakest. Maillot Oro, Spaniard Valverde of Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears, not only weathered the GC storm but outsprinted Vino to gain 12 bonus seconds. The biggest casualty of the stage was Andrey Kashechkin; the Kazakh slipped from second to fourth overall.

Today's Vuelta stage put the riders firmly back into the mountains with a 145K run from Almería to Observatorio Astronómico de Calar Alto. En route were two category 1 climbs before the final humdinger hors catégorie Calar Alto. The climbs: Alto de Velefique (with 88K to go), Alto de Calar Alto (-57K) and the Alto de Calar Alto again, but on a different side, for the mountain finish.

Before the top of the Velefique, the day's escape was formed. Over the top Egoi Martínez (Discovery Channel) nabbed maximum points, which he would also claim on the second climb of the day, edging closer to the mountain leader's orange jersey held by Italian Pietro Caucchioli (Crédit Agricole), second on both climbs.

The lead group: Pietro Caucchioli (ITA/Crédit Agricole), Dmitriy Fofonov (KAZ/Crédit Agricole), Sébastien Joly (FRA/Française des Jeux), Alessandro Spezialetti (ITA/Liquigas), Iñigo Chaurreau (ESP/Ag2r), Oscar Pereiro (ESP/Caisse d'Epargne), Mauricio Ardila Cano (COL/Rabobank), José Antonio Redondo (ESP/Astaná), Sébastien Minard (FRA/Cofidis), Kurt-Asle Arvesen (DAN/CSC), Daniel Becke (ALL/Milram) and Iñigo Landaluze (ESP/Euskaltel). They had 3'40" over the peloton on the Velefique and 5'40" on the Calar Alto.

After the long descent of the Calar Alto, the riders faced an immediate turn upwards for the 2nd, but different, climb of Calar Alto. With dark skies overhead, Becke and Redondo broke free of their companions. The two worked in unison before Redondo continued on solo.

With the hostilities ready to fire, it was going to require some super legs to withstand the 21K 6.4% climb. It was the pacemaking of Valverde's Caisse d'Epargne boys to keep the gap in check that put an end to the other escapees. With -11K, Redondo only had 2'04" over the chase, which was now being aided by CSC for Sastre.

Making the day that much harder, or beautiful, was the heavy downpour that started. Riders were soaked and slogging through some of the stiffest gradients the Vuelta had to offer. CSC faded fast and left Sastre on his own, while the race was turned over to the hands of Euskaltel and Disco. The two teams thinned down the gruppo until only the favorites were left standing, minus Kash.

Andrey Kashechkin (Astaná) was gapped off with around six kilometers remaining, while ahead Redondo was just about to get snatched by the closing gruppo. Once caught the 21 year-old Spaniard turned himself inside-out to work for his Astaná mate, Vino.

After a small last-ditch attack by Carlos Sastre (Team CSC), Vino countered to blow Sastre out the back door. Valverde and Redondo kept pace, the latter coming forward to keep the tempo high enough to discourage Sastre. Non-GC threat Antón was there amongst the GC big-boys, and like a seasoned pro, he read the race perfectly.

Around -3200m Antón went free, smartly leaving behind the GC contenders who, although would like to win a stage, were more concerned with the golden jersey. Under continued torrential rain, Vino kept launching attacks to weaken Valverde but the Spaniard was having none of it. The GC leader kept tight on Vino's wheel while Sastre, Tom Danielson (Discovery Channel) and Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) clawed their way back into the picture.

Antón had about 40" with one kilometer to go, and it was to be enough to ensure the second year pro to claim his first win. Behind there was a slight calm before the burst to the finish line and the bonus seconds on offer. Valverde, looking slightly tattered, was able to use his bullet-like speed to take second (12" bonus) ahead of Vino (8" bonus). Sánchez nabbed fourth while Sastre and Danielson rolled in 28" later.

Valverde has shown to be a top performer, and with only one mountaintop stage to come, he will be hard to dismantle. But don't forget the Spaniard's main rival: Vino, now in second at 1'42". The Kazakh terror, who is able to sprint to victory on the Champs-Élysées and control the Mont Ventoux, will not let Valverde have any peace before the finish Sunday in Madrid.
