Millar Blasts Back

In one of the biggest comebacks the sport has seen, Brit David Millar (Saunier Duval-Prodir) scorched the 33.2K parcours of Vuelta a España stage 14. Only two years a go Millar was on drinking binges and far removed from the passion of cycling, now, less than two weeks before World TT Championships, the 29 year-old must be considered a hot favorite to take back the rainbow jersey. Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears) impressed everyone at the BiciRace.com headquarters; finishing only 13" down, in fourth, the Spaniard retained his Maillot Oro and now maintains a healthy 48" lead over Andrey Kashechkin (Astaná).

The riders of the 2006 Vuelta knew what to expect from today's parcours around Cuenca. Yesterday, in the finale of stage 13, the peloton covered a portion of the crono course, including the cat. 3 Alto del Castillo. The parcours whispered Valverde's name; with a slight lead over Kash and Sastre, this rolling 33.2K was just what he needed. Not dead flat, so that he could used his climbing and acceleration powers to his advantage.

Cast your mind back to the fall of 2003, Millar bagged a Vuelta a España stage and the World TT Championship in Hamilton, but then the bottom fell out. Months later, after confessing to doping, his victories were stripped away and Millar spent two years rediscovering himself and his love for cycling. Now, three years on, we have a refined Millar; an honest crono man with the passion to push the pedals.

"This win proves that it is possible to race and win in the highest level of cycling without using drugs," said the 29 year-old Saunier Duval-Prodir rider. "Having lost it all, being banned and now coming back to win... It is a fantastic feeling."

Millar stormed the course, coming in and knocking Swiss-wonder, Fabian Cancellara (Team CSC), off the top block. His time was less than 1" faster than the Swiss Roubaix winner, but it was enough to hold for the day. Following the 29 year-old Brit was a fistful of powerful riders, but most were just concerned with how they stacked up against their GC rivals and not winning the stage itself.

The surprising results of the day were Danielson's failure and the successes of Valverde and Vinokourov. The young Disco Danielson did not have it and will now need to start searching for possible stage wins. We like Danielson, but at 7'29" back, it would take a seemingly impossible hell-bent mountain crush to get back at the top of the GC.

Alexander Vinokourov (Astaná) is incredible. Winning a sprint stage, winning a mountain stage and today, finishing third behind two crono greats, well, that is like a win for this gritty Kazakh. Vino, finishing 5" back on Millar, now is only 1'38" behind Valverde in the overall GC. You can be sure that The Golden Bullet will be sleeping with one eye open; on watch for a Vino surprise attack in the middle of the night, or, in this case, in the coming mountain stage.

"I'm satisfied," said The Golden Bullet. "I went all out from the start. ... Vinokourov is becoming one of the most dangerous rivals."

The overall race is not stitched up by any means; however Valverde did an honorable ride. His time with Pinarello this past winter has paid off. Notching in fourth, 13" back, -8" on Vino, he will be proud of his ride, but wonder what the heck did Vino do to become such a crono man. Valverde's eight second time bonus of yesterday came in handy, because that is just what he lost today to Vino. On the other hand, his other main rivals fell further back.

Carlos Sastre (Team CSC) finished in eighth at 46" back (losing 33" to Valverde), and Andrey Kashechkin (Astaná) finished fifth at 26" (-13"). Kash and Sastre still occupy second and third (respectively) on GC, but they are now a little further back to Valverde. There has been an Astaná coagulation, which, again, will not allow our race leader to sleep easy. Any coup, perhaps with the help of Sastre, could see a relatively inexperienced Valverde crumble, but if he survives... Cerveza per TUTTI!
