Valverde Guns Down Vino in Mountain Brawl

It was a war of attrition played out in Vuelta a España stage 7 that produced finish: Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears) taking out Alexander Vinokourov (Astaná) in the final meters. The White Bullet, Valverde, formed part of a select group of mountain men in the day's major climb, the 18K Alto de El Morredero. After whipping out the day's escapees, including warrior David Loosli, the favorites started gnawing at each other. Danilo Di Luca (Liquigas) lost contact in the final kilometers while young Janez Brajkovic (Discovery Channel) showed professionalism amongst the big boys, finishing fourth and moving into the race leader's Maillot Oro.

The parcours today was all about one thing, that final beast of a climb, the Alto de El Morredero, topping out after 18 kilometers of climbing. The riders were faced with a relatively flat 136K before the base of El Morredero and the guaranteed explosions.

Only 24K into the stage, Staf Scheirlinckx (Cofidis) and David Loosli (Lampre-Fondital) launched clear of the peloton. Hungarian Laszlo Bodrogi (Crédit Agricole) quickly jumped on to the duo; forming an escape trio that would last until the Alto de El Morredero.

The trio cruised along the hot roads, leading out of León, with temperatures in the mid-30°Cs. Just in the space of 30 kilometers the Belgian, Austrian and Hungarian built up a lead of over nine minutes, which then the gap shot further to 11'30". The time advantage was impressive stuff, but it had to be with the 15% slopes waiting for them in the first sections of the Alto de El Morredero.

The gap amazingly stayed high, through the feed zone in Avituallamiento and by the intermediate sprint in Toreno at -53K, they were still holding on to nearly ten minutes. As sure as a Spanish beer goes well with tapas, the boys' gap started going in the reverse direction.

The race was about 20K away from the day's speed bump. Euskaltel-Euskadi and Saunier Duval-Prodir were on the front, upping the pace of the chasing peloton. There were signs of wear in Bodrogi's crono legs, the big Hungarian is not made for steep slopes, and even though not on the climb, his legs knew what was in store. Scheirlinckx too was looking weary; in fact, it was only Austrian Loosli who was looking like he might have a chance.

As soon as the trio hit the base of the climb, -18K with around 5'30" over the peloton, Bodrogi exploded. Two K later it was Scheirlinckx to blow, leaving only Loosli to hold off the charge. Behind it was Liquigas (for Di Luca) and Astaná (Vino and Kash) driving the pace. And as soon as the main pack hit the base of the Alto de El Morredero riders starting popping left and right.

Unfortunately, David De La Fuente (Saunier Duval-Prodir) did not crack, but suffered from a touch of wheels. The riders’ heads at this point in the race were feeling light; any lack of concentration and you could be sent reaching for the pavement, possibly spelling the end of the Vuelta. We hope De la Fuente, who had a heck of Tour de France, is recovering well.

With -12K, Menchov and Pereiro already gone, Vinokourov fired. Looking much better than two days ago, the Kazakh's move put riders in danger. The gruppo had severely thinned, only leaving a handful of riders; Valverde, Vladimir Karpets, Joaquím Rodríguez (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears), Luis Pérez (Cofidis), Manuel Beltrán, Stijn Devolder, Janez Brajkovic (Discovery Channel), Vinokourov, Andrey Kashechkin (Astaná), Carlos Sastre (CSC), Iban Mayo (Euskaltel-Euskadi), José Angel Gomez Marchante (Saunier Duval-Prodir), Ryder Hesjedal (Phonak), Bernhard Kohl (T-Mobile), Sylvester Szmyd, Ruggero Marzoli, Evgeni Petrov (Lampre-Fondital).

Vino's power surges sent Di Luca scrambling. Our Italian friend was loosely hanging on to the back of the group, and by -9K he was letting the gap open to the other GC contenders. One kilometer later, Kash launched; aided by Valverde, the duo put the hurt on the remaining riders. Sastre, Vino, Valverde, Karpets, Mayo, Brajkovic, Beltrán, Gomez Marchante and Pérez all followed.

Caisse and Astaná were certainly dominating affairs; Valverde had Karpets and Rodríguez towing the race, while Vino and Kash were the dangerous Kazakh duo. The power-players were picking up time on Loosli, yes Loosli. The Austrian, 26 year-old, was still out front, going for his second career win.

Loosli would not make it. Valverde, Mayo, Brajkovic and Beltrán started launching like a grand finale of a fireworks show. The tifosi were "wooo" and "ahhh", while watching the greats of the game trying to destroy one another. With Loosli gone, Vino counter-attacked. Brajkovic, like with Di Luca two days ago, grabbed on to Vino's wheel.

Behind Rodríguez pulled Caisse teammate Valverde back into the game. Vino attacked and Brajkovic was distanced. The Slovenian got on the tail of the White Bullet, who was making a tremendous turn of speed towards Vino. Vino, who looked like he had stage victory wrapped up, was blasted in the last 250 meters by Valverde (and this is he gets the name "Bullet").

Brajkovic (22) displayed a vast amount of talent

Brajkovic, only 22 years-old, displayed a vast amount of talent. His level-headed riding gained him the Maillot Oro, with a lead of 5" on Valverde and 10" on Sastre. Di Luca, finishing 1'58" back, is now 1'47" behind the Slovenian on the GC. We will see Sunday if The Killer returns, or shelves the Vuelta GC run in favor of a bid at the Rainbow Jersey in Salzburg.
