Bennati and Cunego Take Final Day

A double day for Lampre-Fondital: Daniele Bennati struck back after illness to win the final stage and Damiano Cunego safely finished in the leader's jersey to take the overall of the Giro del Trentino. The GC win was a repeat of Cunego's 2004 win, before he went on to win the Giro d'Italia one month later.

Today's stage was one for the escapees to have a go: the GC looked to be secure with Cunego, and the lack of any final mountains meant there was room for lesser-knowns to go free. Four men made a bid for freedom at 82K: Vladimir Duma (Universal Caffè-CB Immobiliare), Devis Miorin (Team Endeka), Simon Spilak (Adria Mobil) and Stefano Boggia (Ceramica Flaminia).

Their move was hunted down by the Lampre-Fondital squadra on the closing circuits: the first time around they had 40", the second it was down to 20". Two kilometers remaining it was only Duma who was hanging on, and with -500m he was crushed, paving the way for a sprint showdown.

Bennati made the sprint look so easy, raising his arms in victory, but also against the bronchopneumonia that had kept him down since before the Milano-Sanremo. A nice topping to the Lampre-Fondital cake, which for filling included another stage win via Cunego and of course, the overall honors of the Giro del Trentino.
