Luca Mazzanti (Panaria-Navigare) won the opening stage of the four-stage Giro del Trentino. The Italian, who showed good form in the Giro d'Oro, out-sprinted Eddy Ratti (Naturino-Sapore di Mare) and Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Fondital) after a torturous 168K from Arco to Castello Tesino. Mazzanti took the overall GC in the process and will wear the leader's jersey in tomorrow's 174K stage to Cles.

Today's parcours served up two GPM's (categorized climbs), with the final leaving five kilometers of hair-raising descent to the finish in Castello Tesino. 30K into affairs, before the race became heavy, an escape of three went: Giairo Ermeti (Miche), Miculà De Matteis (Tenax-Salmilano) and Raivis Belohvosciks (Universal Caffè-CB Immobiliare).

The three were only filler for the day's finale. The escape was taken over by a group of favorites, guided by Cunego's Lampre-Fondital team. On the final climb, the Passo Forcella, Andrea Tonti (Acqua & Sapone) and Emanuele Sella (Panaria-Navigare) attacked and moved free. The duo succeeded in gaining 7" by the top of the Forcella (at 158K), with Tonti going over first.

The race, over the Forcella, became gruppo compatto thanks to the control of Lampre-Fondital. The downhill run to Castello Tesino was a dicey affair, with rain and slick roads, but it did not stop Mazzanti from moving free with -350m to the line. Il Bolognese claimed his first win of the season ahead of Ratti and Cunego.

The foul weather contributed to a crash involving Franco Pellizotti (Liquigas) and Gilberto Simoni (Saunier Duval-Prodir) on the Forcella at 152K. Franco banged his knee on the way down, and Gibo landed on his hip, both were unable to contest the finish but are able to continue in the race.
