Gilberto Simoni arrived in Strasbourg from Italy, where he just welcomed the birth of his new son Enrico, and ready to depart on the 93rd Tour de France. BiciRace.com caught up with the two-time Giro d'Italia winner Thursday to ask a few questions before the Grand Départ.
Congratulations on your new son, Enrico. Auguri! Have you had much time with him? "Thanks a lot. I had about a week with him. It was nice and he is doing great," said Simoni.
Il Trentino had to leave his family to start the French race but he will stay in contact. "Yes, on the telephone. And also on the phone we can send photos so that works great. My family won't visit any of the Alp stages but will stay at home to watch on TV."
Are you content to be here at the Tour after such a hard-fought Giro d'Italia? "I have always said that the Tour is a great and important course," Simoni continued. "I said that I would really like to do the Tour to Mauro Gianetti. Surely, I used energy at the Giro but I think I can do a good Tour de France. I will take it day by day and then see what happens in the mountains."
Will you try anything in the first week? "There are stages? Yes, stage three to the Cauberg. True, but I think I will wait until the big mountains."
OK... Thanks Gibo. Good luck on Saturday. "OK. Thanks."
