I asked my editor if I could have the day off today. "Don't make me write about a boring transition day, French breakaway victory!", I pleaded. "Double D, sometimes that is part of the Tour de France, every once in awhile the French do actually win a race and our job as journalists is to cover that."
So, here it is, and here I am.
Sylvain Calzati's victory today had probably more to do with apathy from the peloton than anything else. With most of the big names probably in recovery mode after yesterday, a breakaway was inevitable, and a successful breakaway even more likely.
With no shifts in the overall classifications at all today, and the rest day tomorrow, things are at a stand still. With some big action slated for mid-week as we enter the Pyrenees, I am excited! I was surprised to see Leipheimer on the start today. I thought for sure he would've pulled out, for absolute demoralisation if nothing else, after his absolutely embarrassing performance yesterday.
My bet is that things will sit as they are until Thursday. With possily a few points changing hands in the Green and Polka Dot jersey competitions. But other than that, not much.
