It was a good day for Denis Menchov (Rabobank), but an even better day for Floyd Landis (Phonak). Stage 11 was picked by many to sort out the GC contenders and display the talents of the strongest teams. But with no dominant team, it was left to a few small groups of riders to chase down the break and fight for the win. In the end, Michael Boogerd (Rabobank) set the pace for his teammate Menchov, slowly dropping Tour contenders off the back. As they climbed up the Pla-de-Beret, the group lost riders until only three were left: Menchov, Landis, and Leipheimer. It was Menchov who won the stage with Landis taking the race lead and jersey.

After the two climbs on Stage 10, the peloton was ready for the second stage in the Pyrenees. Stage 11 consisted of five climbs covering 206K: Col du Tourmalet (hors catégorie, 75K); Col d'Aspin (Cat. 1, 105K), Col de Peyresourde (Cat. 1, 136K), Col du Portillon (Cat. 1, 161K) and Pla-de-Beret (204.5K). 168 cyclists started at about 11.11 am.

Though attacks started 2K into the race, only later were they successful. About 31K into the stage, Iker Camaño (Euskaltel) and David De la Fuente (Saunier Duval) attacked. De la Fuente was on a mission to gather as many king of the mountain points as possible. About 9K later, Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner) and Juan Antonio Flecha (Rabobank) rode off the front of the peloton, catching Camaño and De la Fuente. They established a steady six plus minute gap. Back in the peloton, race leader Cyril Dessel's (Ag2R Prévoyance) team took the lead.

It was De la Fuente first over the Col du Tourmalet, followed by Wegmann and Camaño. The peloton was just over eight minutes back. Time for more attacks. Michael Rasmussen (Rabobank) set off the front, but he was tailed by Thomas Voeckler (Bouygues Telecom). The 2004 yellow jersey holder passed Rasmussen and started on his goal to catch the four ahead of him.

The next climb was the Col d'Aspin. On the way up, Wegmann and De la Fuente rode away from Camaño and Flecha to chase KOM points. It was De la Fuente over the mountain first, followed by Wegmann and Flecha. Voeckler was four minutes back from the leading group, while the peloton had gained time and was just over five minutes back.

As the race toward the third climb continued, Voeckler gained time on the four. It looked like he might be able to catch them. While Ag2R controlled the peloton, Voeckler was within 57 seconds of Wegmann, Flecha, Camaño, and De la Fuente. On the descent toward the Col de Peyresourde, the group of four lost Camaño first, and then Flecha. Voeckler caught and passed Camaño. But he would not catch the rest.

De la Fuente attacked for the mountain points, followed by Wegmann and Flecha. Boogerd and Rasmussen attacked for mountain points off the front of the Ag2R controlled peloton and Voeckler was caught. As the three reached the start of the Col du Portillon, Wegmann was unable to keep up and De la Fuente went off by himself.

Dessel during the stage

Back in the peloton, the trouble began. Tour leader Dessel was dropped as T-Mobile came to the front. They drove the pace hard, hoping to catch De la Fuente. More and more riders were dropped until several small groups formed. While De la Fuente was off the front, several of the contenders were making their presence known, including Landis, Menchov, Andreas Klöden (T-Mobile) and Cadel Evans (Davitamon-Lotto). Rasmussen was after more king of the mountain points and took second behind De la Fuente.

David Arroyo (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears) and Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Fondital) attacked and caught De la Fuente. Eventually, on the descent of the Pla-de-Beret, all three riders were caught. Then the race really began to heat up.

Leipheimer drives the pace

A group of 18 riders established themselves, but as the climb continued the group thinned until about 12K to go. With the yellow jersey almost three minutes back, a small group of seven riders took over. They were: Landis, Carlos Sastre (CSC), Klöden, Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner), Denis Menchov, Boogerd and Evans.

Boogerd drove the pace, while the rest tried to keep up. Klöden, suffering from cramps, couldn't keep pace. Leipheimer attacked, but the group kept close to him. Boogerd was dropped, leaving only five riders. With 3K to go, Leipheimer attacked again and the only riders able to keep up with him were Landis and Menchov. These three would fight for the stage win.

It was Landis who did most of the work in final kilometers, but Menchov sprinted for the stage victory. Boogerd and Rasmussen had set Menchov up for the win, allowing him to save his energy to follow Leipheimer's attacks. Landis kept with the other two and, in the end, finished third on the stage, capturing the yellow jersey by just eight seconds.

Though it was a good day for Rabobank and for the Americans, three riders didn't finish. CSC lost another rider when Giovanni Lombardi abandoned. Quick-Step lost Wilfried Cretskens and, much to the dismay of all the Basque fans, Iban Mayo (Euskaltel-Euskadi) abandoned as well.
