Ullrich Crushes: TT and GC

Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile) continues his path of destruction on the way to the 93rd Tour de France. Backing up his winning performance in the Giro d'Italia, the 32 year-old German won the final stage time trial of the Tour de Suisse, gaining enough time on Jaksche and Gil to move from third to first on the general classification. Koldo Gil (Saunier Duval-Prodir) did all he could to hold on to his race lead, but at the end of the day he fell 24 seconds shy of the 1997 Tour champion.

Welcome to the Tour de France, excuse me, the Tour de Suisse. Ullrich loaded his long range missiles on the firing pad and, despite protests by Saunier Duval-Prodir, went through with his test for the 93rd Tour de France. The German, 50" back on the GC at the start of the day, proved the existence of his military arsenal by hitting out against compatriot Jörg Jaksche (Astaná-Würth) and then Spaniard Koldo Gil.

Ullrich, the 2004 Suisse winner, started the day third in the GC and needed to make up 20" on Jaksche and 50" on Gil. Despite black clouds and occasional rain, falling on the day's final five men, the German was able to hit his target with accuracy. Ulle's missile hit the target: the day's best time, at 38'45". The blast knocked Aussie Cadel Evans (Davitamon-Lotto) out of the top spot by 23" and proved way too much for Jakscshe or Gil to match.

Jaksche came in after Ullrich with a time that was 1'22" slower and Gil, who pulled out all the stops, could only manage to come within 1'14" of Ullrich, knocking Gil 24" back on the final GC. Gil, like Ullrich, was subject to the late arriving raining but still carved every corner of the course to give himself a chance. The 28 year-old Spaniard crossed the line looking like a beaten man but he should be happy with his second overall in GC, a stage win and three days in the race leadership.

Today's parcours, at 30.7K, were different than that of the 50K Pontedera time trial where Ullrich last won: a slightly uphill first half before a rolling downhill to the finish in Bern. Ivan Basso, second behind Ulle in Pontedera, must have been watching his TV with glee as one of his key Tour de France men scored a nice mark.

Fabian Cancellara (Team CSC) posted a blistering time of 40'11", which was good enough to keep him as number one for most of the early day. Evans was the first rider to better the time of Cancellara, coming into Bern with a lighting 39'08". But another one of Basso's possible Tour helpers (at least we hope), Christian Vande Velde, posted a time that said: "Hey Riis, look at me. I am in top form and ready to battle at the Tour de France!" The time of l'Americano: 39'38". Bravo Christian!

Another impressive ride, in fact the whole Tour de Suisse, was done by Linus Gerdemann. This German kid (at 23 years-old) was likely supplying his T-Mobile leader with time checks for the day. Gerdemann posted a time of 39'36", good enough for fifth in the crono and a seventh in the final overall.

Best Italian time: Stefano Garzelli (Liquigas). Il Varesino, winner of the 1998 version of the Tour de Suisse, hammered on the wet roads to a time of 40'22". The time was a positive sign for Garzelli, showing his form is on target for the Tour de France where he will be aiming for a stage win.
