Contador Stays Clear

Alberto Contador (Astaná-Würth) used the Col de Gotthard to shake his companions and win stage 8 of the Tour de Suisse. The Spaniard attacked on the last major climb of the day and then negotiated the descent to stay clear by the finish in Ambri. Behind there was attacks from race leader Koldo Gil (Saunier Duval-Prodir) but they were neutralized by Jan Ullrich's T-Mobile squadra, saving the final battle to tomorrow's 30K time trial from Chiètres to Berne.

Today's parcours took the peloton on a big loop, starting and ending in Ambri, covering three big monsters: hors catégorie Col de Lukmanien, cat. 1 Col de Oberalp and the cat. 1 Col de Gotthard. The Gotthard left the rides with 29K to go to the finish, mostly downhill but with a small cat. 4 bump along the way.

Before starting the day's first climb a huge group of rider were clear. From this a thinning down process occurred until there was a proper escape group to go the distance. The escape: Iker Flores (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Maxime Monfort (Cofidis), Francesco Bellotti (Crédit Agricole) attacked and were joined later by Stefano Garzelli (Liquigas), Gregory Rast (Phonak), Sven Montgomery (Gerolsteiner) and Contador, then further by Marco Fertonani (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears) and Sylvain Calzati (Ag2R Prévoyance).

The group formed around 120K to go but never was allowed that much freedom; halfway up the Col de Lukmanien they only had 3'10". The escapees lost a little more time over the top and were left with 1'30" by the base of the day's second climb, Col de Oberalp, with -70K.

On the Oberalp the group shed the weaker links, Bellotti and Rast. A small descent led us to the day's last major obstacle, the Col de Gotthard. The escape group, starting the climb with a small minute advantage, were able to look down on some of the turns to see the peloton closing in. It was soon to be curtains for the day's move.

The Spaniards could smell the stench of death and wanted no part of it... First it was Flores to blast free from his companions. Flores was given no slack and he was quickly pulled back. Then a second Spaniard fired, Contador had the juice and his attack (at -33K) immediately gained time.

Behind the peloton was dropping all of the weaker members and picking up the remnants of the day's escape. Gil kept true to his word from yesterday and tried to put more time in on his rivals, specifically Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile), who sits 50 seconds back on the GC. The Spaniard gained some time before being tracked down by a mighty looking T-Mobile. Gil's move, nullified before the top of the Gotthard, basically put any sort of GC fight off until tomorrow's final stage, a 30K TT.

Contador had his work cut out for him over the day's finale. He had cleared the Gotthard with a tight advantage, and by -20K he only had one minute to a group of Garzelli, Gil, Ullrich and Jakscshe. The chase group gained riders from behind and soon there was control by T-Mobile. The T-Mobile pace worked to Contador's advantage, they were only concerned about keeping the other GC rivals in-check and not about the lone Spaniard. The Astaná-Würth rider had 36" at -5K, which was enough to keep him clear and give his team their second victory in the Tour de Suisse.

Tomorrow will be the final day in the Tour de Suisse. Gil, with 30" over Jörg Jaksche (Astaná-Würth) and 50" over Ullrich, looks doomed. He will have to pull out one hell of a time trial to hold off Ulle. The German demonstrated his abilities in May at the Giro and he looks even stronger since then.
