Gil Clears Hurricane

28 year-old Koldo Gil from Pamplona, Spain, stayed clear of an impending hurricane to win stage 6 of the Tour de Suisse. The Saunier Duval-Prodir rider, recent winner of the Euskal Bizikleta, blasted clear of elite group of riders on the Albulapass. The chase group, containing Jan Ullrich, did all they could to close the gap to Gil on the 10K descent to the finish but the Spaniard was able to stay clear of the hurricane. Ángel Vicioso (Astaná-Würth) was gapped high rhythm and relinquished his leader's jersey go Gil.
Race fans were treated to a doozy today: a parcours of 212.2K with the passes of Furka (2436m), Oberalp (2046m) and the finale, leaving -10K, of Albula (2315m).
Only 12K away from the stage start in Fiesch a group of six went clear: Rubén Pérez (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Alexandre Moos (Phonak), Michael Rasmussen (Rabobank), Francesco Bellotti (Crédit Agricole), Michael Albasini (Liquigas) and Simon Gerrans (Ag2R Prévoyance).
The six were faced with a lot of climbing but had the climbing muscles of Rasmussen, winner of the 2005 mountains classification at the Tour de France, to carry the weight. Their gap went upwards over the two climbs of Furka, at -172K, and Oberalp, at -142K. The time gap was around 10 minutes but then started to fall, and with -40K the six only had 7'44" in the bank. It was a lot of time, but they still faced the hors catégorie beast of Albula.
Albula present a chance for Dane Rasmussen to slaughter his companions and build a sizable gap that would keep him clear on the 10K descent to the finish. But Rasmussen was still recovering from his time at the Giro d'Italia and did not count on the strength of Gerrans and Moos. The Aussie-Swiss duo gave the Dane hell.
Rasmussen broke clear at -25K but continued to be pursued by Moos and Gerrans. Moos finally checked out the back door but Gerrans persisted and passed the Dane. But the Aussie's efforts came to nothing...

Behind there was a mounting yellow and pink hurricane: Saunier Duval-Prodir and T-Mobile were whipping up the pace. Both teams were showing themselves well for the Swiss race but also for the coming Tour de France. Saunier Duval-Prodir set off a round of missiles in the form of Oliver Zaugg, then David Canada, then José Angel Gomez Marchante and finally Koldo Gil with the death blow. All the while, Jan Ullrich was covering the yellow movement with his henchmen, Michael Rogers and Kim Kirchen.
Ulle polished off the work of his pink posse with an attack at -17K (7K to the summit). This attack impressed the crew at BiciRace.com: it thinned down the pack and showed us that the German is going to be THE MAN for le Tour. Only four could follow the movements of Ulle: Gil and Gomez Marchante (Saunier Duval-Prodir) and Jörg Jaksche (Astaná-Würth). Gomez Marchante setup the death blow, which was released by Gil at -14K. It was then "ciao" to his companions.

Gil quickly picked-up Gerrans and rode free over the cima. A quick zip of his yellow team jersey and then it was all a Campagnolo-powered 53x12 for the descent to La Punt. The Spaniard from Pamplona only had 40" over the Ullrich chase group but was able to take advantage being solo and thus selecting the appropriate lines through the corners.

Gil kept his advantage, trading his yellow team jersey for a leader's jersey of the same color, and proved he is on good form, after winning the Euskal Bizikleta only two weeks ago. Ulle was content with his third place, 40" back. The German, winner in 2004, is now only 54" back on Gil in the GC and looks like a strong candidate for the overall. He will have to keep a close leash on Jaksche in second, at 34", and Gil, first overall, but the final time trial will give Ullrich all he needs to blast into the overall lead.
