Total 1,470K
2006 will bring about the 70th running of the Tour de Suisse. From Baden to Berne the riders will cover 1,470K in nine days. There are eight stages through Switzerland that will be capped off with a race against the clock.
The Swiss tour will come down to the final half of the race. The mountain fireworks will start with stage 6 and will not stop until stage 8. The explosions will be deadly on stage 6 and they will come in the form of three passes: la Furka, l'Oberalp and l'Albula. Stage 7 from St. Moritz will hit again with two significant passes: Julier and Lukmanier. Then the final mountain day, stage 8, will start and end at the Ambri Airfield. Before returning to the airfield the rides will cover three Hors Category climbs: le Lukmanier and l'Oberalp, before final blow, the Gotthard.
The mountain goats will have to lock in an advantage because the final day offers a 30K time trial finale. Unlike last year, the organizers have shifted the time trail to the last stage. This should keep the race in suspense until the final rider rolls into Berne. This could be the place where Jan Ullrich makes his GC winning move, or perhaps we will see 2005 winner, Aitor González deliver the goods for a second straight year.
