The 91st Milano-Torino kicks off on 4 March from Novate Milanese and will signal the start of the season for some big Italian guns. Stefano Garzelli (Liquigas) and Ivan Basso (Team CSC) will be using this Italian classic as their 2006 debut. Just like last year the Italian classic will start in it's new spring time date, and just like last year Basso use the 199K as beginning of his season race-base.

The mostly flat parcours

The oldest of the Italian races, first run in 1876, presents a mostly flat parcours. The main difficulty comes in the form of the Colle di Superga (620m). This climb should help make the selection amongst the sprinters or provide just enough for an opportunist to keep wolves at bay for the final 15K run to Torino. The descent through Pino Torinese leads way to the classical finish in Torino on Corso Casale. It is not the beachside Via Roma but it will provide a litmus test for the Milano-Sanremo only 14 days later.

Departing from Milano at 11.45 will be 19 teams (seven ProTour):
Acqua & Sapone (ITA), Ag2R Prévoyance (FRA), Androni Giocattoli-3C Casalinghi (ITA), Barloworld (GBR), Ceramica Flaminia (ITA), Cofidis (FRA), Lampre-Fondital (ITA), Liquigas (ITA), Miche (ITA), Milram (ITA), Naturino-Sapore di Mare (ITA), OTC Doors-Lauretana (ITA), Panaria-Navigare (IRL), Phonak (Swi), Selle Italia-Serramenti Diquigiovanni (COL), Team CSC (Den), Team LPR (Swi), Tenax-Salmilano (IRL), Universal Caffè-CB Immobiliare (ITA)
