Belgian Nick Nuyens of Quick-Step won by attacking final elite escape group of Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne. Nuyens (25) helped form the day's major move after the Kruisberg, with 82K to go. In the run to Kuurne the Belgian fired and fired again until he was solo with 3K remaining.

The race pushed off from Kuurne under cold (1°C) conditions. Steve Cummings (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) held off the peloton for the first half of the race, but it was over the top of the Kruisberg at 82K to go where the race really started to take shape.

Two groups were spread over the Belgian tundra, both with the right Quick-Step and Davitamon-Lotto representation. World Champion Boonen was in the second group and drove the gap down to the leaders. Once the groups were together (at 40K to go) we had our race.

The front group contained nine: Jurgen Van den Broeck, Leif Hoste (Discovery), Johan Coenen (Unibet), Gert Steegmans (Davitamon), Nico Eeckhout (Jacques), Tom Boonen, Kevin Van Impe, Nick Nuyens (Quick-Step), Matthé Pronk (Unibet). Boonen and Steegmans put in a stunning move in the wind at 13K remaining, but weren't allowed their freedom and were brought back.

It was the attack by Belgian Eeckhout (6K to go) that set the ball in motion. The Davitamon-Lotto rider's attack was countered by Hoste (Disco) and Nuyens (Quick-Step). Van den Broeck, marked by Boonen, helped bring the group back together, but Nuyens launched again. This missile, fired at 3K, won the race. The Quick-Step rider gained a small advantage, which was enough to hold off the charge being led by VDB. The Disco rider was discouraged, marked by Boonen and Van Impe for Quick-Step, and blew.
