The Squadra Gialla hammered on their Scott Plasma machines today in stage five of the Giro d'Italia. Americano Olson, Italian Crono Champion Pinotti and the rest of the supporting crew pushed the needle into the red for Gilberto Simoni. Their aim was to do their best over the 38K parcours, and not to lose too much time to Gibo's rivals, like Basso and Cunego.

The squadra, directed by Pietro Algeri, finished 1'26" down on the day's winner, Team CSC. Considering Saunier Duval-Prodir is not stacked with crono talent, like T-Mobile, their ride is impressive. Algeri and Simoni will focus on this weekend's stages 7 and 8, where the Giro will enter the first of the "difficult" stages. Here, Aaron Olson will be put to his maximum limits, making sure Gibo is kept up front.

BiciRace.com talked with Matteo Algeri, Team DS, after the stage in Cremona. How did Olson ride today in the team time trial? "Olson was OK," said Matteo. "He just missed a few pulls in the last 10 kilometers. But in general it was a good stage for him."

What did Pietro think of the team's performance? "My father was happy about the team. We expected to be 1'30" back, and so it happened! The Giro will start next week..."

More on Gibo later. Stay Tuned.
