With a seriously strong effort today, Juan Manuel Garate has moved into the top 10. Winning and looking resplendent in the colors of the champion of Spain has to be one of the finest days of his career, even though he was "gifted" the victory by the Deutsch Destroyer-Jens Voigt.
Jens Voigt is absolutely amazing! The guy never ceases to amaze me. I don't think he has any fear at all. He'll take on anybody, anytime or anywhere....and most likely give them a run for the line too. We saw that with his assault on the Ardennes last year, and his tireless breakaway work in the Tour.....the list goes on and on. When he's not racing his bike, he must have a hard time sitting still with the boundless energy stores he has.
I'd be willing to bet too, that he probably eats CSC out of house and home. At the breakfast and dinner table at races, he eats everything in sight to fuel that enormous diesel engine leaving just scraps for the rest, just like he does on the road.
He's a lot like George Hincapie. He has an enormous engine for riding on the front for countless hours towing the entire peloton. You cannot limit him to any kind of parcours. He can win as a rouleur, flats, mountains, you name it. The only thing he's not particularly renowned for is being a solid TTer. Although, he's no slouch.
I think that Jens is a little more courageous than Hincapie though. What he may lack in tactical savvy, he makes up for in spades with shear, brute force! I just can't see Voigt ever having any self doubts.
People like him and Vinokourov or Bettini are really what make a lot of racing exciting to watch. They're never afraid to have a go.
