I think that we will see that Franco Pellizotti's intelligent move in the break will turn out to be a very pivotal moment in the Giro. It's hard to believe they let him get that much time! It's hard not to feel bad for poor Axel Merckx. He rode his heart out after attacking the breakaway in the final 10k and to get passed in the final 150m has to be painful.

Liquigas will probably not regret letting Pellizotti go into that break either. I personally believe that Danilo DiLuca doesn't have the legs to repeat his performance of last year. I think they are better off putting their eggs in Pellizotti's basket.

Paolo Savoldelli is apparently suffering from allergies big time. Hopefully the Bergamasco will see the winds change in his favor as the Giro develops.

Even so, I would have to think that Basso is clearly in the driver's seat. If he does a good TT on Thursday, he will likely put time into every one of his nearest rivals, furthering his lead. Then going into the mountains all the impetus is on the other's to make things happen. He just has to mark everybody, which isn't always easy. But the way Basso looks so far, he should make it look easy.
