Quinziato Wins First

Italian Manuel Quinziato of Liquigas powered free to take Eneco Tour of Benelux stage 2, his first professional victory. The 26 year-old anticipated the sprint at -2000m, and stayed clear of the peloton, led by Simone Cadamuro (Milram) and Wouter Weylandt (Quick-Step).

A flat 194.6K from 's Hertogenbosch to Sittard-Geleen greeted the peloton. There were several riders who tried unsuccessfully to break the strong-hold of the peloton but it was not until -60K that one got away.

Carlos Zarate (Saunier Duval-Prodir), Paul Martens (Skil-Shimano) and Carlos Abellán (Astaná) formed a trio that would last 40 kilometers. This early in the tour the sprint teams are eager to set up for their men, with the added possibility of putting their man in a classification, like Boonen yesterday, therefore escapes stand little chance.

Today, Boonen, out of his rainbow tunic, was blasting down the Dutch roads in the reddish leader's jersey of the Eneco Tour but did not order Il Treno Blu into duty. Instead, after the trio was caught, chaos ensued.

The peloton navigated a final 23K circuit in and then back out of Germany for the Dutch finish. A brief kick by Alberto Fernández De La Puebla (Saunier Duval-Prodir), followed by a pile-up (worse off David Vitoria of Phonak), led to a split in the peloton. Race leader Boonen was there as Discovery Channel briefly took control of the charge into Sittard.

But before you could say "well organized sprint train", Joost Posthuma (Rabobank) darted away. The Dutchman was pulled back but that led to the winning counter-attack by Quinziato. With 2000 meters remaining the rider from Bolzano jammed his Bianchi machine to win in stage 2, his first career win.

By staying tight with the chasing gruppo, Boonen will remain in the red for another day. Tomorrow the riders will face a flat 185K into Belgium.
