Barredo Keeps Liberty Party Rolling

Carlos Barredo (24) destroyed his 10 day-long escape companions to run home free for the second consecutive Liberty Seguros-Würth win. The Spaniard put in early efforts on the climbs to whittle the group down but it was not until 9K to go that he was final solo. Behind affairs were controlled by Ag2R Prévoyance to keep their man, Simon Gerrans, safe in the orange leader's jersey.

Starting from Strathalbyn it was another scorcher: temperatures in the high 30°'s and an escape that formed at 4K. The riders are taking full advantage of the Aussie sunshine by forming escapes from the start gun.

The group of 11 that formed at 4K were: Carlos Barredo, José Joaquín Rojas (Liberty), Alexandre Botcharov (Crédit Agricole), Cadel Evans (Davitamon-Lotto), Daniel Becke and Michele Gobbi (Milram), Vincent Jerome (Bouygues Telecom), Serge Pauwels (Chocolade Jacques), Jonathon Clarke (South Australia.com-AIS), Ben Day and Mathew Hayman (UniSA-Australia). It was again Liberty who were active in the day's stage after putting Davis across the line first in stage 2. Team Ag2R Prévoyance were happy to let the group go free and mark the tempo in the peloton for Gerrans. Tomorrow should be the final test for the GC and the Aussie will need his rest.

The Spaniard, Barredo, was willing to put it all on the line in today's stage. Liberty were playing their cards with two men in the escape and sent their boys attacking at every opportunity. The accelerations of Barredo at 50K to go on the rolling terrain put four riders out the back door: Liberty teammate, Rojas, Gobbi, Day and Clarke.

Seven were remaining, including Evans, for the mostly downhill kilometers into Yankalilla. Barredo again showed his Spanish muscle by punching at 9K to go. The move stuck and he left his companions scrabbling on the way to his second professional win. It was a day of thinning down the competition until only one strong man left, and today that was Carlos Barredo.
