Graeme Brown (Rabobank), like in stage 4, took the sprint ahead of some impressive competition. The Aussie barreled down the streets of Karlsruhe, beating Zabel and Napolitano to the line. Jens Voigt (Team CSC) arrived safely in the cool yellow colors to cap off a dynamite Deucthland Tour. The German took the overall race honors along with three stages; stages 2, 6 and 7. Bravissimo Voigt.

The final day of the Tour of Germany. Jens Voigt, riding high in yellow, only needed to make it the 172.1 kilometers to the finish in Karlsruhe and he would be crowned winner of his home tour. The only real action of the day was going to the inevitable sprint finish.

Well, you knew a breakaway would go clear. In general, the teams of the sprinters appreciate a non-harmful escape; it allows the peloton to "relax" and not be forced to pay attention to any additional attacks. So the big sprint teams in charge, Milram and Lampre-Fondital, allowed a trio to break clear.

Mads Kaggestad

Mads Kaggestad (Crédit Agricole), Loyd Mondory (Ag2R Prévoyance) and Pascal Hungerbühler (Vorarlberg) busted loose after 25 kilometers from the start town of Bad Krozingen. The three built a slight advantage over the Milram-led gruppo; they had 3'55" at -50K.

Milram was savoring the day across the German roads; setting a nice tempo that would pull their sprinter, Erik Zabel, to the escape just as the stage came to a conclusion.

The pacemaking brilliantly made. The gap to the three leaders started to tumble; 2'05" at -40K, 1'30" at -35K. Lampre-Fondital added some of their foot soldiers, setting up for Danilo Napolitano, and the gap was shut almost immediately. -19K the trio was back in the sights of the peloton, and at -16K the day was over for Kaggestad, Mondory and Hungerbühler.

T-Mobile edged their way to the front, but really this must had been just for TV time. Like a small non-ProTour team, they pink posse were fighting for any sort of publicity after a lack-luster week in their home tour.

Milram and Lampre-Fondital were having none of it and pushed the T-Mobiles to the side, while covering a few small attacks. The most notable attack came from prologue winner and yellow jersey wearer, Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel), in the final 2000 meters.

Hand it to Zabel and his Milram boys for making an impressive showing. For a while, even BiciRace.com was convinced that Zabel was going to pull off the win. Think again. The aggressions of Rabobank and a forceful Lampre-Fondital were too much for Zabel, who ended the day with second place.

Brownie shoved his way through the madness to successfully handle the bigger sprint squadras. The Aussie closed out a successfully D-Tour and in future races will be given a little bit more sprint respect by his Dutch employers. Two ProTour wins in the D-Tour are very respectful.

Not as good as three and the overall... Voigt, you da man! The German from Berlin stamped his authority all over the nine-day affair. Adding to his Tour de France stage win, the D-Tour made for a superb 2006 season but there will probably be even more to come from this monster who goes by the name "Jens."
