Jens Voigt (CSC) not only did enough to defend his Deutschland Tour yellow jersey but he also dominated the time trial. The German went one minute faster than the previous best time, set by Laszlo Bodrogi (Crédit Agricole), to win the stage and effectively win the race overall. Barring any mishap in tomorrow's final sprint stage, Voigt, now with three stage wins, will take be crown king of his home tour.
The rains gave the Deutschland Tour a break; stage 6, starting under sunny skies and ending with clouds, did not receive a drop. Essentially a perfect day for a crono, where most of the attention was being turned to the Voigt-Leipheimer battle. German Voigt, in the race lead, would have to hold on to his 24" gap over American Levi Leipheimer, riding for the German Gerolsteiner squadra. The other major battle was for third overall, with only a flat stage 8 to come this would be the day to settle the final GC.
Hungarian crono stallion, Bodrogi, put down the early fast mark. The Crédit Agricole rider, with plans for an hour record attempt, clocked 46'06" over the 38.2K parcours. The ride was hot stuff and looked like it might stand up all day. Hats off to early testers: American Jason McCartney (Discovery Channel), who was 26" behind Bodrogi and Italian Marco Pinotti (Saunier Duval-Prodir), at 1'02".
Even if Voigt was to be The German of the Tour of Germany, one other home rider was completing an aggressive Tour. Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner), who impressed us in the Giro d'Italia, blazed the Bad Säckingen roads today. Maybe going out to fast, Schumacher, went through the half-way time check the quickest but slightly faded in the latter half. Schumacher can be happy with this ninth place for the day, which moves him into 11th overall.
But the majority of the attention was on Schumacher's Gerolsteiner teammate, Levi Leipheimer. Il Americano had to battle a fiery Voigt and pull back the 24" to move from second to first on the overall leader's board.
It was not to be for LL. Starting at 15.51, Leipheimer never seemed to find his groove. Legs and body looking ultra-smooth and fast, Il Americano could only manage fifth best time when he crossed the 2nd time check. Nearing the end of the 38.2K course, LL had slowed to the point where he was in danger of being in Voigt's sights. Crossing the line with 46'17" gave LL fifth at the end of the day and moved him further behind Voigt on the GC, now at 1'38" in second. He may not have repeated his 2005 overall victory but he is in second overall and can also be proud of a fine stage win, stage 5 to Seefeld.
But what can you say about Jens Voigt? With three stage wins in the Deutschland Tour and a likely overall victory tomorrow, his popularity will soar even higher in Germany. Today, all along the course there were thousands of fans screaming for the rider from Berlin. It worked...
Voigt, spurred on by the tifosi and a chance at winning his home tour, absolutely hammered the crono parcours. Staying ahead of LL all day, he was fastest through all three time check: 9" ahead at the first time check, 25" at the 2nd and 47" at the 3rd. Those seconds turned into a minute plus by the final; the 34 year-old finished with an amazing 1'03" over Bodrogi and secured his third stage win in the 2006 D-Tour.
A shout out to Alexander Vinokourov and his Astaná teammate, Andrey Kashechkin. Vino rode the course with a time of 46'23", which put him third for the day and signaled that he will be one to watch in the Vuelta a España. Meanwhile, Kazakh Kash crushed two Russians, Gusev and Petrov, to move from fifth to third overall.
Kash finished sixth on the day but more importantly he put in 13" on Gusev and a good 41" on Petrov, who slipped from third to fifth overall. It will be a nice podium spot for the 26 year-old Kazakh and the performance will help Astaná's future in the ProTour.
