You can take the Mount Kühtai out of the D-Tour but you can't stop Leipheimer from taking victory. The 32 year-old of Gerolsteiner controlled affairs on the Cat. 1 run-up to Mösern, earning victory in front of Kashechkin and Bruseghin. Leipheimer could not get Voigt out of his mind. The likeable German, winner of stage 2, handled his own and took race leader's yellow jersey. The 30K shaved off of today's stage due to snow might allow the riders to have a little extra power tomorrow; the D-Tour faces the second and last mountain test, 196K from Seefeld to St. Anton.

Race fans had to contend with a one-climb stage, organizers made the decision early this morning to cut the mammoth Kühtai pass due to heavy snow on the upper slopes. This meant around 30K less for the peloton to race and quicker legs coming into the summit finish of Mösern.

An attack, and this looked like it might work giving the hyphenated day, by a group of six formed early on. la fuga: Laszlo Bodrogi (Crédit Agricole), Christian Knees (Milram), Jan Boven (Rabobank), Paolo Fornaciari (Lampre-Fondital), Sébastien Rosseler (Quick-Step) and Robert Retschke (Wiesenhof-Akud). With -65K they had 2'35" over the peloton.

Err, maybe we should go back to bici schoolin'... By -35K, the lead was cut to 1'05"; these boys were going to be manhandled by the big-guns before the race hit the climb up Mösern to Seefeld. Rosseler, smelling the stench of impending death, jumped from his companions. The move, at -17K, did not go very far. Shortly hovering around 20", the Belgian was dissolved before the start of Mösern.

Andy Schleck (CSC) fired off on the early slopes. His attack was nullified but cued the heavy-hitters to the fore. The front group was narrowed down to Leipheimer, Voigt, Schleck, Bruseghin, Petrov, Cuesta, Tschopp, Devolder, Piepoli and Kash (notably missing were Vino and Gerdemann).

Kash and Piepoli double-barreled the gruppo, forcing riders to be spit out the back. Voigt, showing bravado and grit, was doing all in his powers to stay in contact with the front runners; at stake for the German was the race's yellow jersey. Voigt kept yo-yoing off the back, while Leipheimer started to let lose with his artilleries.

After attacking in the final meters, Il Americano, overall winner in 2005, summited Mösern first signaling his intentions to take control of this race. The cranks on Leipheimer Specialized kept turning at an unbelievable pace over the next 2K and down to the finish; eventually delivering him to a 3" advantage in Seefeld.

Voigt, Gusev and Bruseghin limited their losses behind the American and now occupy the top three spots in the GC. Jens Voigt, now in the race lead, will likely be dropped tomorrow while the final GC becomes clearer. Stage six will keep the pain level in the red zone. The 196K stage will take the riders over two Alpine passes, the second one being the summit finish on the Arlberg Pass. The mountain goats will want to score as much time as possible tomorrow because the next day's crono will be the decider.
