Jens Voigt (Team CSC) destroyed his two late-stage escape companions to win Deutschland Tour stage 2. The German went clear with Kazakh Andrey Kashechkin and Italian Davide Rebellion after the final climbed of the day, leaving -17K. Early race leader, Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel), finished with the peloton, five seconds behind, keeping hold of the yellow jersey.
A better day for the riders of the Deutschland Tour; the heavy rain of yesterday passed, making for a dry, but cloudy day. The stage saw its main escape of the day, when German Ronny Scholz (Gerolsteiner) went free at 104K. Solo riding over the mostly flat first half of the stage, Scholz had 3'40" in hand at -75K.
The stage from Minden to Goslar contained two category 2 punches in the second half of the race. The second categorized climb, the 4K-long Bockswiese, appeared with 10 kilometers remaining, which would provide a perfect launch pad for our race winners.
Scholz kept the hammer down but it was not enough to escape the rolling Disco thunder. Behind Gusev's Discovery Channel squadra were keeping German Scholz in-check to make sure he did not ride away wit the overall lead. By -60K they had brought the lead down to 1'45", and by -48K the junction was made to Scholz.
The reel in of the lone escapee was not done to perfection; ideally the team of the GC leader would want to absorb the escapee with around 10 kilometers remaining. An early retrieval means the possibility of even more escapes. And that is what happened...
Charles Wegelius (Liquigas) busted loose and then busted up. With -40K the Brit took a flyer that helped pave the way for a bigger escape group. Following Charly an escape formed with Marco Fertonani (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears), Voigt, Andrey Kashechkin (Astaná), Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner), Anton Luengo (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Björn Schröder (Milram), Francesco Failli (Liquigas) and Beñat Albizuri (Euskaltel-Euskadi).
Voigt topped the Cat. 2 Bad Grund first and gained maximum mountain points. On the descent, leading to the next Cat. 2 climb, the gruppo built a small advantage. Once they hit the Bockswiese the cracks started to appear. One by one the riders were dropping off the back, while the thinning peloton was approaching.
The bomb came in the form of Kazakh Alexander Vinokourov (Astaná). Vino launched at -17K, blowing up the field and approaching the summit. His move faded but teammate Kash took over along with Voigt (yes, again Voigt!) and Tin-Tin Rebellin of Gerolsteiner.
The trio passed the summit of Bockswiese and then got freaky on the descent. Pushing the speeds towards 70Kph, they were trying to stay clear of the peloton. The gap grew and Tin-Tin moved into the virtual GC lead with -9K. But the time was axed down to 8" with -3K.
The finale was touch and go leading all the way into the final 500 meters. We had a sprint of two established greats, Voigt and Rebellin, with a strong up and comer, Kash. No one wanted to open up the sprint but with the peloton closing the pressure was on the rise. Voigt, obliviously feeling strong all day, hit out. Rebellin gave a nice reply but could not match the winner of stage 13 of the Tour de France. Kash rolled home for third, but we expect to see more of him before this tour is over.
Gusev maintained his race lead. The Russian riding for the squadra Americana finished five seconds behind the trio with the peloton, which was led home by Erik Zabel.
