Gusev Tops Germans

Third-year professional, Russian Vladimir Gusev of Discovery Channel, topped Germans Gerdemann and Lang to win the Deutschland Tour prologue. The 24 year-old covered the 5.5K parcours with a time of 6'42". Defending overall champion, Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner), had to contend with rain; finishing 40" of the pace of Gusev.

Wet weather greeted the start of the 2006 Deutschland Tour. Rain early in the morning and for the last rider played havoc with cornering speeds, and, thus, overall times on the 5.5K parcours.

One person in particular, Americano Bobby Julich (CSC) wanted to take the day lightly. Still coming to full speed after his crashing the first TT of the Tour de France, the wet roads of Germany were no place to shine his skills. It was instead Julich's teammate, Iñigo Cuesta, who posted an early fast time of 6'51".

Another CSC man, David Zabriskie, had a chance to post a quicker time due to a dryer course. Il Americano punched every corner faster than compatriot and teammate Julich but did not have the goods to better Cuesta's time. Zabriskie finished with an off time of 7'08".

The day switched hands to home boys; Germans Gerdemann and then Lang posted some lighting times. Linus Gerdemann, T-Mobile's up and comer, clocked a fantastic 6'43", a full 7 seconds quicker than Cuesta. The time was nearly matched by German crono champion, Sebastian Lang. Lang, who put in two hot Tour de France crono rides, impressed but came two seconds shy of compatriot Gerdemann.

Little known Russian, Gusev of Disco flipped the turbo switch. The third year pro, last year with CSC, hacked a few milliseconds off of Gerdemann's time; finishing with a time of 6'42". Gusev's time was not to be matched.

2005 Deucthland Tour winner, Americano Leipheimer, did not have Mother Nature on his side. When Il Americano headed down the start ramp the rains followed. Leipheimer wisely backed off the accelerator, preferring to save the gas for the mountains to come later in the week.

So the day went to Gusev. The 24 year-old scored his second career win, adding last year's Russian crono championship win. Tomorrow expect to see a smiley Russian leading the peloton in the yellow GC jersey on a relatively flat stage out of Düsseldorf. The peloton will ride 198 kilometers, finishing in Bielefeld.
