Dutch Remmert Wielinga Tops Italians

27 year-old Remmert Wielinga (Quick-Step) took victory in the 2006 GP Chiasso ahead of four Italians. The Dutch rider finished with almost 30 seconds over Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) and Bertagnolli (Cofidis). The win was a continuation of great form that Wielinga displayed two weeks earlier in the Tour Méditerranéen.

Under cool and rainy conditions the GP Chiasso rolled to a start. 12K into the race Wielinga helped form the day's main escape, which also included 2001 winner Davide Rebellin. The Dutch worked well with his companions but finally decided to fly the coop with Frenchman Chavanel.

The duo built up a good advantage over the chasers. On the last lap (of 12) Wielinga heard that Rebellin had attacked from the group of chasers, and at this point he struck out solo. His move stuck and carried him to victory in Chiasso. Behind Rebellin won the sprint for second ahead of Bertagnolli and Nibali.

"There was no way I would have let this opportunity pass me. I did my best and it worked," said Wielinga. "I'd like to dedicate this win to myself, the team and Lefevere, who gave me the chance to be part of this great team. We worked well today."
