JJ Haedo Crushes ProTour Boys a Second Time

The torturous day on the cliffs of Highway 1 ended with a bunch gallop in San Luis Obispo. Just as three ago, Juan José Haedo took the win and elevated his Toyota-United Pro squadra to star status. Discovery Channel and Team CSC, who are itching for a stage win, had no reply for JJ's explosive display. As expected, Floyd Landis (Phonak) kept safe in his golden threads.

Today was a picturesque day of the 1st Tour of California: a multi-colored peloton gliding down Highway 1, past Big Sur and Hearst Castle while keeping the grand Pacific Ocean to the right. The 210K from Monterey to San Luis Obispo consisted of a saw-blade parcours ... Up and down all day.

The race blew to shreds on the climb through Big Sur. On the back abandons were the name of the game, while on the front riders were slipping off the left and right. By 90K into affairs there was a sizable group off the front: Chris Horner (Davitamon-Lotto), Lars Bak (CSC), Steve Zampieri (Phonak), David Kopp (Gerolsteiner), Aaron Olson (Prodir-Saunier Duval), Paolo Savoldelli (Discovery), Tim Johnson (Health Net), Ben Brooks (Navigators), Michael Rogers (T-Mobile), Mark McCormack (Colavita) and Lucas Euser (TIAA-CREF).

As the roads flattened out the break was reshuffled and riders were tossed off the cliffs (or out the back). There formed a group of six that consisted of Chris Horner (Davitamon-Lotto), Lars Bak (CSC), Vladimir Gusev (Discovery), Jean-Marc Marino (Crédit Agricole), Glen Chadwick (Navigators) and Mark McCormack (Colavita).

Lack of cooperation and the tempo of Phonak assisted in the demise of the escape. Gusev and Chadwick showed their legs and slipped off at the last second to build-up a sizable lead. Their advantage was over two minutes at one point but behind he teams were aligning for a bunch gallop in San Luis Obispo.

The boys only had one minute in hand by 15K to go ... It looked doomed. The work of Team CSC, Health Net and Toyota-United Pro sucked the duo back. On the narrow streets and tight corners of San Luis Obispo the two were erased. CSC upped their efforts, taking over from the massive Health Net effort. T-Mobile and Davitamon-Lotto (for Fast Freddie) surged before the final left hander. JJ Haedo had excellent position and handed it to his ProTour competition: a second stunning win in three days. JJ, you da man!
