Landis Swipes Stage and Gold

Floyd Landis has taken gold for himself and his Swiss Phonak squadra. The American won the stage, swiped the leader's jersey and in the process delivered a hard blow to the two super-squadras: Discovery and CSC. Given some modest teamwork, it is very likely that Landis will take the gold jersey all the way to the finish in Redondo Beach.

Today was what many said would be the stage to decide the final overall of the 2006 Tour of California. The reason is that there are no mountain finishes in the remaining stages and it will be hard for a rider to slip the grip of the leader's team. So the undulating 27.4K Northern California course might have decided the outcome before the peloton crosses to Southern California.

Early fast-man was none other than TT-stallion Nathan O'Neill, the guy rocks on the aero-bike and always puts in a great ride. His time was to hold until the heavy-hitters started swinging.

Vande Velde posted a time of 37'42", which shows excellent form heading towards May's Giro d'Italia. Immediately after VDV arrived Disco Danielson, who upped his compatriot's time by one second. Then fired Zabriskie and Landis: The CSC man nailed O'Neill's time by 30 seconds, but it was No-Fuss Floyd who came storming in with THE time of 35'58". [Note to Franco: Check if this guy is going to ride the Giro! Come on Floyd! Pink Floyd?]

The pedal revs of Julich, Leipheimer or Golden George could not touch Landis. Hincapie's had his day in gold but it is now likely that Landis will have a few more and carry the jersey to the finial podium in Redondo.
