Juan José Haedo (Toyota-United Pro) foiled the big boys to win stage 1 of the Giro di Cali. Phonak and Davitamon-Lotto were doing the muscle-work on the final finishing circuits to ensure a sprint win for Robert Hunter or Fred Rodriguez but it was the 25 year-old Argentinean who took glory. Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) easily kept the leader's golden jersey and proudly finished the stage in his hometown of Santa Rosa.

Today's stage from Sausalito to Santa Rosa was an undulating affair of 129K. LL was keen to keep his golden threads on the stage that finished in his hometown of Santa Rosa. There were not too many difficulties facing his bubbly water team, tomorrow and the Wednesday's TT will likely be more decisive.

Jackson Stewart (Kodakgallery.com-Sierra Nevada) and Jean-Marc Marino (Crédit Agricole) formed the day's main escape. The duo worked their way off the front and with 76K to go they had 1'20" on the peloton. They were able to build their gap to a little over three minutes but always under the watchful eyes of LL's team.

The German Gerolsteiner squadra, with help from Swiss Phonak, nailed the duo on the outskirts of Santa Rosa, 23K to go. It was now gruppo compatto and the sprint guns started to jostle for position.

Up ahead were three circuits of 5K on a tight and technical parcours. Phonak and Davitamon-Lotto were pumping up the rhythm and lining out the peloton for Hunter and Rodriguez. But ho ho ho, Argentinean sprint-force (yes, we can call him a 'sprint-force' now) Haedo spoiled the ProTour team party, leaving in his wake Tour de France stage winner O'Grady and German Olaf Pollack.
