Michael Rogers has done what nobody has done before him, win the TT World Championships three times in a row. The Aussie built up his efforts over the 44K long course, taking control by the final time check. At the line Rogers had room to party, he had 24" over José Ivan Gutierrez of Spain. Now the Australian will continue to TT for one more year in the cool World Champion stripes. Bravo Michael!
Madrid in Mid-September is great, clear skies and warm weather. In front of the riders was a rolling course of 44K, two loops of 22K. It was a TT where the efforts needed to be dosed out properly. The first on the course was also the early pace setter, Matias Medici (Argentina). Medici was hanging in the pits as virtual leader until Wiggins came storming home. The British track specialist slaughtered all the intermediate time checks, and ousted Medici by 2 seconds. Wiggins kept the fast time at the first time check (10.5K) the entire day, but he paid for his early efforts and faded towards the end of the 44K.
Out of the third group of starters the real scare was José Ivan Gutierrez. The Spaniard started off well and continued in the same manner. He posted 2nd best time at 10.5K, first best time at 21.9, and 2nd best time at 33K. The Illes Balears rider came home the leader, keeping a time that Fabian Cancellara could not even top. The Swiss rider came extremely close to knocking over the Spaniard, but it was not to be.
The favorites that had off-days were Victor Hugo Peña, Thomas Dekker, Bobby Julich and Michael Rich. The Americano rode well, but nothing compared to what he is capable of doing. The Olympic Bronze medalist was not able to push any faster after a long and fruitful season. The German, Rich, is a TT-master: 2X German TT champion and 3X 2nd at the Worlds. But today he failed to impress, and finished at 2'13" back.
The Italians, Pinotti and Bruseghin, rode similar times. Marzio Bruseghin slotted in 14th at 2'11", while Marco Pinotti was 17th at 2'22". BiciRace.com is proud of the Italian TT Champion, Pinotti, for riding well against such tough competition. Keep checking his Inside Scoop to get his first-hand account of his race.
But the final tip of the cycling cloth hat is to Rogers. The Aussie was the winner in Hamilton in 2003 (after David Millar was disqualified), winner in Verona last year, and now for the third time in a row in Madrid. An achievement that had never been achieved in cycling history before today.
