Roberto Heras and the Liberty Seguros-Würth squadra did what everybody expected them to do today ... Make mince-meat out of the entire field. Bradley McGee lost 12 minutes and his Golden jersey today. Aitor Gonzales showed his hand by losing over 4 minutes.
Liberty Seguros-Würth absolutely shredded the peloton to ribbons with infernal pace-making by the "axe-man" Isidro Nozal, Joseba Beloki, Michele Scarponi and Angel Vicioso in the final 10K. Denis Menchov was the only one who could even remotely stay with the leaders. He sits a close 6 seconds behind Heras on the GC right now. But, if you ask the DD, I can see that rapidly disintegrating into minutes.
The Vuelta is very far from over. But with an offensive like the one we saw today, the prognosis is not good for the opposition. The Morale is shaken for everybody here in Spain after seeing what Heras could do. That mental edge is not easy to overcome. Heras is clearly on-form, and ready to win this Vuelta ... We'll see how everybody hangs in there.
I would like to see some offensive riding by Carlos Sastre. He is somebody I would really like to see win the overall. Right now, he's sitting 1:01 behind Heras. So he will indeed have his work cut out for him. OK, I am off to the Mar ...
