Petacchi wins number two of this year's Vuelta.
I cannot for the life of me imagine racing in this kind of heat. The DD is not a man for this hot weather in southern Spain, and this does not sound even the slightest bit hospitable to me.
The Spaniard's all seem to love the scorching hot weather that is stereotypical of Spain. I think I would be more suited to the climbs of the Pais Vasco (Basque country). Not so much for the climbing aspect, gravity is not in my favor, you see. But, rather for the damp humid weather. Yes, the DD doesn't mind going out in the rain at all. It's a good way to stay cool while riding. The hot weather saps all my strength.
And also, I like to see a tree every now and again. I don't particularly care to see kilometer after kilometer of burnt-brown countryside while I ride my bike, or even while watching the Vuelta go by. I like some greenery, I think it's good for morale. My morale anyway.
Everybody's different though and it takes all kinds to succeed, in life and bike racing. That's why cycling is such a beautiful sport. The playing field is always different. Sometimes hot, sometimes cold, sometimes hilly ... flat, cobbled, headwind, tailwind, etc ... And, you never know how you will be feeling on a given day either.
Lots of variables.
