Hushovd Nails Tricky Downhill Finish

The Alto de Castillo ended any the hopes of a true bunch gallop. Today it was the Green Machine, Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole), holding off an attack by Paolo Bettini (Quick-Step). Française Des Jeux was able to keep Bradley McGee in gold for another day.

Some of the rider's prayers were answered over night, today there were cooler temperatures and some clouds present. After a long baking day in the sun in stage 4, the riders were ready for a shorter and cooler stage. Right away the missiles were launched, as the peloton was trying to establish a proper escape group.

A group of 20 were clear with 138K remaining, the group contained the GC leader McGee. This group got trimmed down to a more manageable group as the kilometers ticked away. There was a group of eight to form with 118K remaining: Staf Scheirlinckx (Cofidis), Michael Barry (Discovery Channel), Eric Leblacher (Crédit Agricole), Patrick Calcagni (Liquigas-Bianchi), Thorwald Veneberg (Rabobank), Jorge García (Relax Fuenlabrada), Jakob Piil (Team CSC) and David De La Fuente (Saunier Duval-Prodir). They established a smart advantage of 3' with 95K remaining.

Behind the sprinters' teams were being aided by the French team of McGee. Our Canadian fiend, Barry, was up the road in the virtual leader's jersey. Française Des Jeux wanted to make sure that the race came back together by the finishing town of Cuenca. They were joined by the usual teams of T-Mobile, Quick-Step and Fassa Bortolo.

By the base of the day's only climb, the Alto de Castillo, the break was washed away. This left 13K to go, with a cobbled climb that had a nasty descent, before the downhill run to Cuenca. Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) rocketed up the road, shattering the peloton behind. Sánchez was riding in the gutter (side of the road) to avoid the nasty cobbles on the climb. His move was quickly marked by Joaquím Rodríguez (Saunier Duval-Prodir), who was searching to add more points to his mountain's jersey. Rodríguez topped the climb first, securing his points.

The descent to the line was all out: The sprinters were trying to rejoin after being gapped off on the climb, and the punchy riders were trying to stay away for a stage win. The tension was mounting, José Azevedo (Discovery Channel) and Leonardo Piepoli (Saunier Duval-Prodir) crashed, due to someone else's error. Sánchez was going ballistic trying to keep his advantage, but one by one the riders were regrouping.

Finally there was a small group of riders, and Quick-Step controlled the final proceedings. They put Juan Miguel Mercado and Tom Boonen on the front for their Italian rider, Bettini. The Olympic champion launched early, trying to surprise some of the sprinters in the group. The move failed and he was swallowed in the final meters. From the group Thor Hushovd emerged, all green, and won an exciting stage. The whole Quick-Step team was seen scratching their heads after the stage finish.
