Italiano Leonardo Piepoli helped his team, Saunier Duval - Prodir, to obtain their first ProTour victory. It was on the slopes of Pal-Arinsal where Piepo turned on the gas, followed home by Yaroslav Popovych (Discovery Channel). Popovych rode well enough to take the overall honors, thanks to Discovery Channel's impressive stage 1 TTT. Surely it was a good win for the yellow squadra after being embattled in the politics of the ongoing Giro d'Italia.
The game started at 22K into the race, with an escape of 3: Daniel Navarro (Liberty Seguros-Würth), Maryan Hary (Bouygues Telecom) and Frédéric Bessy (Cofidis). The trio gained up to 21 minutes, an advantage that had to be controlled. And sure enough, as the escape group approached the first of two final climbs, their advantage was almost gone, down to 2'30". Over the top and approaching the mountain-top finish, they were chased by a hard-charging Piepoli, Popovych, and Osa. Piepoli found inspiration from his team's troubles in Italy, and took out Popovych in the final meters.
Former Tour de France winner, Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile), lost 1'19", and is now down 1'33" in the GC. He will carry this disadvantage going into tomorrow's TT. Stage 5 is a 17.1 mountain TT, with 900m of altitude gain. This should really shape up, and clarify, the standings in the 2005 Volta Ciclista a Catalunya.
