For the first time in the 21 year history of the USPRO Championship Americans have swept all 3 podium places.

As far as national championships go, this is a unique race in that it is open to riders of other nations. Why? When the race began Americans didn't have near the clout in professional cycling that they currently enjoy. There were simply not enough registered American pros to take the start line so race organizers opened the race to Europeans to broaden the field. Freddy Rodriguez was the last American to win the race outright back in 2001.

Today's race took in 156Mi/250K on a 14.4 mile circuit. The brutally steep Manayunk wall, which has sections topping 17%, most certainly played a key role in the finale. Also playing a role was the weather. The temperatures reached 85 degrees Fahrenheit which did not bode well for some of the riders from the northern latitudes. The Aussies and Spaniards loved it though.

Algeri and Horner

An early move was made by Subway, Monex, Team CSC and Jittery Joe's, but with several Pro Tour teams taking the start, this move was surely doomed. Move after move went off the front trying to find that right combo of riders that would work well enough together to establish a gap and win the race. But Jittery Joe's was ever vigilant at the front of the peloton, and with the help of the other chasers kept the average speed for the first hour of racing at about 42 Kph.

Health Net, who placed 2 of their riders in the early moves, evidently fancied their chances for an overall victory. The team is having one of its best ever years and boasts several guys that can seal the deal. First it was Mike Jones, then it was Mike Sayers who took turns softening up the peloton. CSC was spearheading the chase at this point and was spending valuable energy bringing back the flying Health Net rider.

Wherry Pate Horner

With one lap to go and 3 smaller laps Danny Pate of Jelly Belly rolled the dice and took a flyer. Pate may not be a household name, but he was the former under 23 TT world champ so this guy knows how to gauge his effort. After cresting the Manayunk for the last time 2 riders, Chris Horner and Chris Wherry, set off in pursuit of Pate and quickly reeled him in. The 3 worked very well together and, in spite of a little cat and mouse, managed to keep the bloodthirsty peloton at bay. They were setting the stage for an all American sprint finale. Wherry attacked the other two and needed to manage his rhythm for 9 tortuous minutes in order to win the coveted stars and stripes jersey, he did exactly that. Danny Pate followed Wherry home, taking a brilliant second place. Chris Horner rounded out the podium in 3rd place.
