Petacchi and Steels Sprint

Allesandro Petacchi and Tom Steels Stage 1 Sprint, photo: Tour de Romandie

Today in Avenches, Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) got the best of legend Tom Steels (Davitamon-Lotto) in a true bunch sprint. Sprinters, GC-men, and crashes were all part of the day's work in the final K.

It was a day when Sébastien Rosseler (Quick-Step) and Ivan Ravaioli (Saunier Duval - Prodir), decided to make a long escape, to try their luck. They escaped after 17K and mid-way through their escape, they had a maximum of eight minutes.

Cycling is cruel and Fassa Bortolo is even crueler, especially with fast-man Petacchi in the running. The duo's lead was whittled down slowly, but surely. Rosseler was eventually dropped by Ravaioli, who was going alone with a thin margin (about 50") at 30K remaining.

At 25K, with the weather worsening, Fassa Bortolo had caught their prey, and the day was over for Ravaioli. Ravaioli did pick up enough points today to secure the mountains jersey, which he will wear in tomorrow's stage.

There were a few desperate attacks as the line drew near, but they came to nothing. The fast-men were mixing it up, and the GC-men were up in the chaos to secure placings for the final GC in a few days. A crash took out some of the sprinters, but Steels and Petacchi were able to open up the juice in the final meters. Petacchi taking the win easily, over a strong Belgian.

Paolo Savoldelli, Stefano Garzelli, Bradley McGee and Oscar Pereiro were all up in the final top 10 for the stage. Pereiro retained the leader's jersey, but on equal time with Petacchi (thanks to bonifications). Savoldelli is 2" back, and looks strong.
