Kirchen Takes Stage and Overall

Kim Kirchen (Fassa Bortolo) won the short seventh stage and moved himself into the overall lead. The stage was the first of two for the day, an afternoon time trial follows. Kirchen will face tough competition from Weening and Di Luca, who are 2nd and 3rd overall.

Today's race was under chilly, but sunny conditions, a welcome change after two days of tough weather. The stage covered three ascents of the Karpacz, the final being the uphill finish.

Rabobank and Liquigas-Bianchi did the big share of work today, for Pieter Weening and Danilo Di Luca. The teams swallowed up the early break attempts, and then set up for the final ascent. Rubén Lobato (Saunier Duval-Prodir) made a move at the base of the climb to upset the rhythm of Michael Boogerd. Boogard was giving his all for teammate Weening, and he kept turning the pace when Lobato went.

The attacks forced out the race favorites: Weening went, followed by The Killer. But the perfectly timed move went to the rider from Luxembourg, Kirchen. He passed the Rabobank-Liquigas duo in the right moment, 150 meters to go, to take the win and a few seconds. The time will be crucial for the afternoon's TT. Stay tuned to BiciRace.com.
