George Hincapie (Discovery Channel) nailed victory in today's GP Ouest France, at the end of a roller-coaster day. Hincapie nosed out Alexandre Usov (Ag2R Prévoyance) at the line, a tight finish that took race judges five minutes to determine. Il Americano did not see the Belarusian charging hard, and nearly lost the stage.

The GP Ouest France, or GP Plouay, started this year with less French flair than in previous years. The race is now apart of the ProTour and that meant less local teams on the line, and more big-guns out to win this prestigious race.

Local French boys, Walter Bénéteau (Bouygues Telecom) and Stéphane Bergès (Agritubel), were off the front fighting an attentive peloton with 40K remaining. Their move was quickly crushed and followed by a big-name attack: Vino and Rebellin. Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) jammed it off the front on the 2nd of the circuit's two climbs, with 30K remaining. Alexander Vinokourov (T-Mobile) joined the Italian and they built up a small advantage.

The Vino-Rebellin show was soon over. Danilo Di Luca (Liquigas-Bianchi), followed by Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile), went at the beginning of the last two circuits of Plouay. They too were soon brought back, the day was starting to look nullified, with the big favorites watching each other closely.

The day came down to the final circuit with around 60 riders. More attacks went off the front. One by Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis) looked strong, but it too failed to gain the needed distance over the hungry pack. The thinned group made it's way back into Plouay for the last time.

Hincapie Wins

Hincapie (32) headed a bunch gallop for the line. His victory was close, due more to early celebrations than to strength. Il Americano added a forth huge win to his 2005 palmarès, that include two stages in the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne and stage 15 at the Tour de France.
