Tom Boonen (Quick-Step) won the Paris-Roubaix in a sprint over George Hincapie and Juan Antonio Flecha. Boonen has reached Belgium super-star status after winning Tour of Flanders last weekend and now Paris-Roubaix. He managed a unique double win that only eight other racers before him have accomplished. On the famous velodrome in Roubaix is where the final battle was fought for the outcome of this Sunday in Hell. Boonen zapped his break-away companions, Flecha and Hincapie, in a superb sprint force. Boonen started his sprint in corner three and opened the gap out of the last corner as Hincapie tried to hang on.

Barredo

The first serious move formalized about 50K into the race and it contained Erwin Thijs (MrBookmaker), Stéphane Berges and Florent Brard (Agritubel), David Herrero (Euskaltel), Sebastian Lang (Gerolsteiner), Carlos Barredo (Liberty Seguros), Sébastien Chavanel (Bouygues) and Arnaud Coyot (Cofidis). The break gathered a maximum lead of 11 minutes, after which their death was slow and certain.

Around midway, Peter Van Petegem took a fall, along with Allan Davis. Both abandoned and called it a day. Davis is a probable future winner of Paris-Roubaix. Before the race hit the Warlaing-Vrillon (km 186 – 2400 m, 4 star) section, there was a lifting of the pace by Filippo Pozzato (Quick-Step). Pozzato was lifting the pace for his teammate, Boonen. By the end of the Warlaing-Vrillon section there was the formation of an all-star group that would form part of the final winning break. In the group was Boonen (Quick-Step), Backstedt (Liquigas), Hincapie (Discovery), Michaelsen (CSC), Van Bon (Davitamon-Lotto), Flecha and Cancellara (Fassa). Missing from the mix were teams T-Mobile and Rabobank. Von Bon punctured and was later chasing with Wesemann (T-Mobile).

Next on the list of pain was the Le Carrefour de l’Arbre (km 242,6 – 2100 m, 5 star) section. By the time this stretch of road was reached, we had the departure of Backstedt (Liquigas), Michaelsen (CSC) and Cancellara (Fassa). Cancellara was so strong working for his teammate, and it was now up to Flecha to come through for Fassa Bortolo. Backstedt did not have the legs. He fought hard till the end, finishing fourth.

Surprising was the lack of attacks by Hincapie or Flecha, knowing that Boonen could pack a fast finish. Boonen, Hincapie and Flecha arrived together in the final kilometer on the velodrome in Roubaix. Boonen was much too powerful to catch when he came around his companions, but Hincapie gave good chase to finish second. Boonen will now take the ProTour jersey to the Amstel Gold Race.
