Stage List, Dust Devil's Daily Wrap
Not a lot of shake-ups on the GC today, none to be exact. The stage was mainly a chance for the GC fav's to have some rest between big mountains, letting some of the breakaway specialists and sprinters take the center stage. The weather was far from hospitable in the normally scenic Lake Como/Lecco region, with most of the riders unrecognizable due to being covered by their rain capes. The favorites for overall were probably relieved to have today's stage behind them. The closing 20km or so were riddled with punctures and crashes, uneasy moments.
Petacchi, predictably, walked away with the bouquet today. Now that almost every sprinter has abandoned, there's little competition left. He'll still have his work cut out for him if he hopes to try to pry the points jersey from Bettini's back. He'll also need a bigger size from the race organization, since Bettini's is probably junior size.
With little action expected on the day following the rest day, I have my sights locked on stage 17 that finishes at Limone Piemonte. The Giro is still far from over. This stage (17) should see a Gibo Simoni, who is frothing at the mouth, ready to attack. He has to, if he has any hopes of defending his ego, and taking back some time from Savoldelli. We will no doubt see if Savo has what it takes to defend himself against what is sure to be a flurry of attacks.
