Stage List, Dust Devil's Daily Wrap
Well, today’s stage wasn't quite as exciting as I would hope for. But, heck! I was surprised again. I'm not normally a fan of McEwen, but anybody upsetting Petacchi's mighty lead-out train, and grabbing victory for the little guy, is OK with me. And he took the pink jersey to boot.
I must say I'm a little bummed out thinking about the horrific crash of Alberto Lopez de Munain (Euskaltel-Euskadi). I have a special place in my heart for those little Basque men and I never want to see somebody leave a race unconscious on a stretcher. Apparently he went face first into a guard rail. I hope he is alright.
It was pretty typical early Giro d'Italia racing with a breakaway trying to establish itself in vain. With a mostly flat stage it is pretty suicidal though. The escapees would have to be almost delusional to think they could escape the Fassa train. The climb really caused some carnage though, with Quaranta getting dropped right away. I can't exactly say I'm surprised by that, but he did manage to get back on on the descent though, along with the others who were dropped.
The finish looked a bit dodgy, and McEwen used his BMX skills to good effect. He used Jaan Kirsipuu for a lead out and crossed the line to become the 3rd Maglia Rosa in as many days.
But, what I'm really licking my chops for is to see the peloton get blown to pieces on the climbs to come. And the first real sorting out of the GC. I guess we'll then see if Simoni is the "real" leader for Lampre-Caffita.
Until stage 3,

Tom Danielson Interview, Before the Giro d'Italia, "We looked at Lance a lot for that stage. And if I was able to do it, then I was going to try to do it. Lance had a lot of faith in me, and kind of stressed me out a little bit..."
Iban Mayo ... "It depends on the situation. With the Euskaldunes riders you speak Basque, with those who don't know Basque you speak Castellano."
