Ivan Parra of Selle Italia-Colombia triumphed again in the Giro d'Italia. After taking stage 13 to Ortisei in an escape of 179K, the Colombian went on a mission to repeat his success in today's stage 14. He arrived in Livigno solo after a break-away of 171K, that started on the first climb of the day (Colle del Frassineto). Now after two incredible days, he continues the tradition of his family's winning ways. His brother was 3rd in the 1988 Tour de France.
The day in the high mountains started from the gun with an attack by Belli (Domina Vacanze) and Parra, who was joined by teammate José Rujano in the maglia verde. Also forming the move was Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Caffita), on the move for a stage victory and lending a hand to teammate Gilberto Simoni. The move worked well over the Colle del Frassineto, and then down to the valley before heading towards the feared Stelvio. It was a move that paid off for Selle Italia-Colombia boys. Rujano was gaining all sorts of mountain points, topping the Stelvio first, while Parra had his eyes on a stage victory.

Behind on the Stelvio, the big GC boys monitored themselves and nullified the climb of lo Stelvio. Francisco Vila worked his tail off for Simoni, huffing and puffing all the way up the Stelvio's slopes. The only real explosion was off the rear. Immediately upon starting the climb, Ivan Basso was off the back with a bang. His teammates rode faithfully beside him, giving their support to their companion who has had a rough weekend in the mountains. By the top, the Cima Coppi, the GC contenders were down by 3 minutes to the fugitives. Key members of the GC group were Wegelius, Garate, Simoni, Cunego, Vila, Di Luca, Savoldelli, and Sella.
Basso and his boys topped the Stelvio painfully slowly, at 18'38" to the leaders, and about 16 minutes to his rivals. The mighty Stelvio can create legends, but it can also smash dreams. Basso's overall chances disappeared today on the Stelvio's slopes. At the top, after 48 switchbacks, Basso stopped and was helped into his warm gear for the decent. Bjarne Riis got out of the team car to help his fallen star, and then Basso continued on courageously.

On the Passo di Foscagno the breakaway shattered, and just like yesterday, Parra flew away. He gunned his Colombian legs up the slopes of the final GPM and held his gap to the finish 14K later. The GC gruppo watched each other and did not make any attacks on each other. Di Luca was hanging tough and not giving up, while Cunego was working for Simoni. After the top of Foscagno, there was one last little peak of the Passo d'Eira, where Simoni launched himself. His attack was joined by Di Luca and a strong Garate. Providing additional drama to the end of an epic stage, they powered down the small decent and into Livigno, netting about 30 seconds to Il Falco.
Tomorrow is a mostly downhill stage along the famed shores of Lake Como and Lecco. Tomorrow will be followed by a rest day and a chance for the wounds to heal. Basso amazingly carried on today fighting through his difficulties. He finished around 40 minutes back, but the tifosi are wondering if he will show up for tomorrow's start.
