Jittery Joe's-Kalahari Report

Preview: A rolling course that should see a small group at the end. Expect to see a sprint from a select group of riders.

Team Jittery Joe's-Kalahari Goals: Like stage 1, keep the leaders fresh. This course has a tough finishing circuit with a short, nasty hill in it. Lance won this stage last year to show that it is not just a sprint for the field sprint specialist.

Jittery Joe's, South Africa

Another warm start to the Tour of Georgia. The Jittery Joe's-Kalahari team rolled out of Fayetteville with thier sites set on Rome. It was to be a long day with 197K to cover. There were thousands of fans out in Georgia, especially in Rome. The fans in Rome wanted to see an Italian campionissimo win. Andrea Tafi (Prodir - Saunier Duval) did his best and went on a move with 125K to go! Tafi quickly got into his rhythm on the hot Georgia roads and gained time quickly, partially aided by a tail-wind. His move was one of force, that grew to 6 minutes.

A pro like Tafi has seen the joys of cycling and the pains of cycling. His move was a classic move that sometimes works, but often fails in the closing kilometers. Tafi has made his name with such brave moves as the one fans witnessed today.

Tafi's move was brought down by the hills and the teams of Phonak, Discovery ("Disco") and Health Net. Andrea was back into the fold, as the peloton ramped it up on the out-skirts of Rome. Disco-Discovery were there cranking it up for super-star Lance Armstrong. Health Net were giving it a go, but could not reckon with the Euro-forces.

It was hard-man Peter Wrolich of Gerolsteiner (former winner of Rund um Köln, 2002) who got the goods over Quinziato and Armstrong. Wrolich took the sprint at the right moment, in a stage known for a tricky finish. Armstrong won this "sprinters" stage last year.

BiciRace.com caught up with the Jittery Joe's-Kalahari team after stage 2. So how did the boys do today? Geoff was so active and mixing it up, around 11th in the sprint, still waiting on the official results. Jonny was the team player today, covering moves left-and-right. He was gapped off towards the end. Evan, Craig and Bruno got split off today, it was tough out there. The sun was hot and the finishing circuits in Rome were tough. Tim was up front again with the big boys, staying clean, ready for the TT tomorrow. T-Lo was at the front rocking-out with the Euro boys.
