Art Eggertsen, A.K.A. "The Food Coach", has worn a variety of hats in his career. He's done everything from being a health food restaurateur to working as a congressional lobbyist for nutritional education. It is precisely this knowledge and passion in nutrition that led him to create a very different, and I might add, tasty energy bar: ProBar.
ProBar comes in two flavors, Original Blend and Whole Berry Blast. What it lacks in the variety of flavors it more than makes up for in flavor. I'm not just paying lip service when I say that this is a truly delicious energy bar.
Weighing in with a meaty 380 calories per bar, this is one of the few energy bars out there that can legitimately claim to be a meal replacement. It has a moist consistency that is very easily digestible. Many of the other bars out there, and I won't name names, taste like compressed sawdust and require a large volume of water to be digested. This is not the case with the ProBar. The density of a ProBar might prove a bit much while trying to eat one while riding the slopes of a steep climb. I'd probably recommend one when you are sitting around with the chain gang sipping cappuccinos after a long hard ride.
... with ProBar you are also supplying your body with wholesome non-processed ingredients that it needs to perform at an optimum level.
In reading the nutritional facts label it might seem counter intuitive that a so-called "energy bar" has 18 grams of fat versus only 9 grams of protein. This is because, according to Eggertsen, protein's main function is to generate new tissue, and is accordingly the body's last choice for fuel. Also, during vigorous workouts fats can be metabolized at a fast rate, while conserving carbohydrates.
Continuing on down the nutritional facts label you will also notice that there are no hydrogenated oils, fructose syrup or artificial flavors. These bars are also 100% vegan, so there are not any dairy products added. ProBar asserts that about 70% of the ingredients are blended and not baked. What this means is that, being uncooked, the nutrients are absorbed faster by the body and in turn converted into energy at a more rapid rate. Any cyclist that has had the proverbial "bonk" will appreciate the value of ProBar's blended ingredients.
A ProBar can be found from $2.20 to $3.00 apiece, which is a little more than other energy bars on the market, but keep in mind that they are considerably higher in calories than most energy bars. Then there's the knowledge that with ProBar you are also supplying your body with wholesome non-processed ingredients that it needs to perform at an optimum level.
