Treviso-based Pinarello is one of the big names in Italian cycling, and for good reason, they have supplied the rigs ridden to Tour, Giro and Hour record wins. Did you notice the frame that was under Oscar Pereiro this year at the Tour de France? That was a Dogma FPX and Pinarello are proud very proud of this fact.
While talking with grandson of Giovanni Pinarello, Nicola, at the EICMA bike show in Milano, he made sure to point out to BiciRace.com that Pereiro is the "Tour Winner" and that he was on a Pinarello Dogma (we nodded in what will likely become truth in the next months). What is interesting is that Pereiro was one of the few riders on a non-carbon machine. The Dogma FPX is mostly magnesium, a rare but effective material in cycling.
"I want a bicycle measured to the millimeter and that rides perfectly on descents." - Oscar Pereiro, likely 2006 Tour de France Winner.
The magnesium tubes, MgAK61, provided by Dedacciai are some 35% lighter than aluminum alloy that can be used in similar applications. The MgAK61 magnesium tubes, exclusively available to Pinarello, remain rigid, like aluminum, but providing the comfort level found in an all-carbon frame.
The Dogma FP becomes Dogma FPX for 2007. With a close eye you can see that the magnesium tube set from 2006 to 2007 is slightly smaller in diameter, and Nicola tells us it is also slightly lighter. The result of this tube work comes after six years of Pinarello leading the way in magnesium researched and designed frames.
To have a rider like Pereiro, who is passionate about what he rides, on top of a Dogma FPX means a lot. When pointed out that the Spaniard was one of the few riders not on carbon, Pereiro said of the Pinarello, "I want a bicycle measured to the millimeter and that rides perfectly on descents."
The Onda front and rear forks have been strengthened, for 2007 called the Onda FPX. In addition to the double wave configuration (Onda means "wave" in Italian) there is the addition of reinforcing side ribs. Comforting to know when you powering to Montélimar and the Tour de France race lead.
Nicola pointed out that for 2007 there is the use of a 1-1/8" bearing on the top of the head tube, going down to a massive 1-1/4" bearing on the bottom; combining with the side ribs to produce a stronger product. We did not seem to care, our eyes were fixed on the smooth color blend between head tube and fork; this year Pinarello is color coding their carbon forks... Bravo!
