The EICMA show provides an opportunity to see the offerings from frame makers around the world but it was a Milanese company, headquartered just 20 kilometers away from the show that deserved BiciRace.com's further attention. Cinelli, a long-standing and classic name in the industry, provides some of the most thoughtfully designed frames, and this year was no exception with the introduction of the Man Machine.
The Man Machine is one of Cinelli's top offerings for 2007 and the company is proud of their work. Cinelli's Daniele Rossi explained to BiciRace.com that the frame weighed in at 80 grams less than their top offering from 2006, the XL8TR 4. The task was accomplished through the use of a monocoque mold (versus the wrapped and joined tubes of the XL8TR). The molding allows Cinelli's engineers to distribute the carbon layout and create a frame that has the right stiffness/weight ratio.
Weight is one thing, but what sits Cinelli apart from the world of carbon producing companies is the aesthetics. The Milanese company takes great pride in how their frames perform but also their semblance. Note that the top of the Man Machine seems to run in one smooth line from the head tube, past the seat tube and all the way down to the rear dropouts; it was designed that way.
Then there are the unique names for their models and colors. As noted in our April visit of the Cinelli factory, the company has some stirring names for their frames. The Man Machine was named after a Kraftwerk album (you know, the techno-band that made the "Tour de France" song.). The techno-music inspired frame comes in two color choices: Carbo Silver & Chili or Carbo & Orange.
If the ladies are feeling a little overwhelmed by the manliness, Cinelli offers, new for 2007, the Little Wing. The frame, named after a Jimi Hendrix song, comes in one color: White & Green Pod.
