EICMA - Look Frames

BiciRace.com happily stumbled upon the Look booth at EICMA. We are familiar with their product, they have been in the business for a long time. They make no secret of their heritage or their Frenchness. Quickly we were informed how every frame is designed and manufactured by the Look wizards in France, instead of being shipped to the east.

That French quality and pride was best seen in Look's newest offering, the 585. This carbon gem is very similar to the 565 of last year, the big difference coming in the bottom bracket. The bottom bracket is oversized and all carbon, as opposed to the 565, which is aluminum. The result is a frame that is 990g, or 1288g with the HSC 5 SL fork. (The 565 frame is 1200g)

The Very High Modulus carbon is quality material, allowing for fewer layers of carbon. The lower number of layers mean lighter weight but without sacrificing strength or responsiveness. The tubes all come together in some stylish looking carbon lugs. It reminded BiciRace.com of the old classic steel frames, but without all the weight.

Finally, we did not mind that almost all of the frame was painted in white, in fact we wish more carbon frames were painted. Many bikes now are just black or grey, to show off the carbon material. But for 2006 Look is offering the same cool white that the professionals on Crédit Agricole use (like Saul Raisin and Pietro Caucchioli). And if you do like your frames in the flesh, the French company offers the 585 in a 'titanium clear coat' or black.
