Alessandro Ballan (Lampre-Fondital) was more than happy to chat with us this morning before the depart of Tour de France stage 20, the last of the 2006 race. The Italian is one of the most personable riders in the peloton and every morning we enjoyed chatting on the day's racing.
Sunday morning in Antony, we were catching up on Ballan's teammate Bennati, who crashed out of the Tour a few days ago. "Bennati is doing fine," said Ballan. "Nothing is broken and he is sore. He is disappointed because it will jeopardize his ride in Hamburg [HEW-Cyclassics]."
Ballan spent most of the early Tour working for Bennati and the second half ensuring Cunego won the Maillot Blanc. "Overall it was a good Tour for us. I was happy in the first week and we came close to getting a win for Bennati. ... Cunego is very happy with the White Jersey. He really did a fast time trial yesterday. It was good for him and his future in the Tour."
"Pink is much better than white but I am happy to have this jersey," added Damiano Cunego.
BiciRace.com would like to say thanks for reading everyday. We are traveling back to Italy and will have more news soon. Grazie!
